Lowes Pulls Advertising From Bill O’Reilly’s Show?
Markos Zuniga of Daily Kos fame, apparently smarting from airline Jet Blue’s backing away from his yearly convention, is cheering an apparent decision by home improvement chain Lowe’s decision to pull advertising from Bill O’Reilly’s show.
“Two can play at this game,” Kos smirks.
Personally, I think these attempts to silence political speech by attacking corporate sponsorship is childish, and ultimately destructive to political activism. Disagree with someone? That’s great. The freedom to disagree is part of what America’s all about. But why should you care if a company like Lowe’s or Home Depot or whatever wants to advertise to the people you disagree with? Political ideologies aside, do we not all have a need for home appliances and hardware? Do we not all shop?
Is it really all that sinister for companies to want conservatives - or liberals or people with with all the ideologies in between - to shop at their stores?
I didn’t support people going after Jet Blue’s sponsorship of Yearly Kos, nor do I support Kos’ hordes going after O’Reilly’s advertisers. Ultimately, the worst thing you can do to pundits you disagree with - be it a blogger or a television/radio guy like O’Reilly - is to stop reading them and/or patronizing their shows.
If enough people agree with you, the advertising dollars will leave too.
