Louisiana Trying To Ban Low-Rider Pants

A state representative in Lousiana is upset about all the underwear he’s seeing due to low-riding pants. Now he’s going to do something about it.
From The Associated Press:

People who wear low-slung pants that expose skin or “intimate clothing” would face a fine of up to $500 and possible jail time under a bill filed by a Jefferson Parish lawmaker.
State Rep. Derrick Shepherd said he filed the bill because he was tired of catching glimpses of boxer shorts and G-strings over the lowered belt lines of young adults.
The bill would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both.
“I’m sick of seeing it,” said Shepherd, a first-term legislator. “The community’s outraged. And if parents can’t do their job, if parents can’t regulate what their children wear, then there should be a law.”

Ever see a little more of a guy’s crack then you wanted to when he bent over? Not a pleasant site, but it happens right? Heck, we even make jokes about it. “Plumber’s crack” is what we call it here in North Dakota.
But should such exposures really be misdemeanor offenses? Is this representative really trying to pass a law that could put somebody in jail for not wearing a belt?
I understand his point about seeing the boxer shorts and g-strings. For a lot of kids these days, that’s the fad. That’s the style. They let their underwear show. I’m a little tired of seeing 12 and 13 year-old girls in the mall with their underwear hanging out of their pants. I think its disgusting. But I also don’t think its cause for a law.

Well, that tears it, I have to run for political office now. My platform? I want to pass a law making it illegal for moronic politicians to introduce or attempt to pass stupid laws about things that belong in the public discourse, and have no business being regulated, law-ified, or otherwise tainted by the stinky hand of government interference.

There is dangerous thinking in his statement.

And if parents can’t do their job, if parents can’t regulate what their children wear, then there should be a law.

What he is saying, is that it is ultimately the goverment’s job to raise children, and that parents are only allowed to do it just so long as they don’t piss off a grouchy old Congressman.

  • James

I wear low pants! So arrest me why dont you? I think this is ridiculous and his children are probably made fun of since it seriously is the “thing” to do. I remember one time my sister saw a boy with low pants at the shopping center and she went up behind him and pulled them down to his ankles! If their that low…just pull them to were its acceptable.

How could you possibly enforce a law that applys to everyone wearing a certain style? The government should worry about more importanat things than the fashion trend of 2004.

  • Nick Speyrer

Dessing like a gangster is a mindset and sooner or later they ARE gangsters. There is concern that this targets black youth, don’t they overwhelmingly constitute eventually the majority of the prison population. The ACLU rightfully defends unjust situations, but to encourage this sort of thing is poor judgement.

  • Kor

    Doesn’t matter.

Low rider jeans are soooo hardkore (with a backwards “K”). I usually wear mine around my knees just to show off my boxers. Thats hornets. I will continue to do so when I visit Luisiana this summer. I plan on marching to town hall wearing nothing at all. And hot chicks should do the same. And when they are’t marching to town hall they should be wearing super low jeans. That would be cool.

A state-imposed “dress code” should not even be a debatable issue in this day in age; it is undeniably unconstitutional. I am surprised that there is no precedent for a case like this, thinking back to all the bra-burning of the late 1960s. I wonder why the “state representative in Louisiana” is never named in this article and I also wonder why he can’t seem to handle young boys and girls revealing small parts of their underwear. I think that this feeble attempt at government-sponsored control of symbolic speech has more to do with this guy’s sexual insecurity than anything else.

  • Carolyn

This law would be pretty hard to enforce and it would just become pointless because too many people wear low rider pants anyway. As much as Louisiana wants to stop this type of clothing from being worn, there isn’t a way to stop the production of these pants and therefore, people will continue to wear them. Perhaps a way to cut down on the amount of underwear shown on guys and girls is to have school rules about clothing restrictions.

  • Someone

Wow, this is pathetic. There’s a war on terror going on and they’re trying to regulate fashion trends? I wear low riding pants and no pathetic law should pass against this victimless crime.

    3. ever been to louisiana? me neither. but it’s a red state. that’s right, a state of bush lovers. they even tried to outlaw low-riding pants saying “a waist is a terrible thing to waste.” [stop laughing. i'm serious ]. now, don’t get me wrong. i know some very cool and intelligent kids from louisiana with very liberal beliefs. but i think it’s safe to say that they are sadly in the minority. so maybe god’s flooding out louisiana because he’s tired of yo baby’s mama

  • Aaa

Do you wear your boxers showing a lot? Do you ever sag your shorts? A lot of boys wear their shorts below their knees revealing about 5 inches of their boxers. I wear Fruit of the Loom exposed waistband knit boxers. They have a gray waistband and are one solid color. Sometimes I wear and 1 boxers. I sometimes wear my boxers showing. I show about 2 inches of boxers

  • http://dmong.co.nr/ Derek

That is seriously just outrageous. I understand people wanting to wear their pants lower a few inches, its just style, it’ll come and go. But if people seriously wear there pants 25 inches below their waist, I think that’s kind of a problem. The real issue is determining whats ok and what’s just over the top.

And, I bet some of you older guys probably remember some of your ‘now-ridiculous’ styles.

Pilgrim. Not they, we. We are the government. Our representatives make laws.
We have laws requiring shoes in stores, shirts on, no wet pants, etc. Decency?
What decency. These people want to lower us to the lowest common denominator just like them. I refuse and I do not want my children seeing other people’s underwear in public places. They can do all this at the voodo lounge.

  • Michelle

  • sparky

wow. that is disgraceful. no wonder there are so many problems going unfixed, the government is wasting time worrying about fashion and trying to enforce their own opinions, not what the rest of the community would feel about something. it makes me want to just walk around lousiana in my underwear.

  • pparets

Ok, here’s the flip side: The low-rider crowd is also typified by belligerance, intimidation, occasional violence and filthy language, all of which they flaunt in public. It’s all linked in the ‘hip-hop, in-your-face, fuck you mentality which so many think is ‘phat’.

Do the majority of people who are subjected to this arrogant vulgarity – families in malls, the elderly, devout folks and children – have no rights here?

I am sick and tired of the “don’t our lawmakers have anything better to do”, “Government can’t tell me how to behave” arguments, when it comes to my right to not be verbally and visually assaulted by some kid’s deliberate indecent vulgarity.

Sooner or later, we set a limit or lose the whole concept of decency all together.

  • Sasha

I’m beginning to think that the people in gov’t have nothing better to do, so they come up with ridiculous things like banning low rise jeans. If you don’t like it look away. They are just making a fool of themselves by trying to control what teenagers and even many young adults wear. We are in a war at the moment and Louisiana is worried about seeing boy’s boxers and girl’s G-strings? This is the stupidest bill I’ve ever heard

  • sdb

Well the whole truth about low rider pants is that when you were turned out in prison you wore your pants low to show that you were someones bitch. Thats the truth. Convicts also call it trolling for fags. fyi: I worked in the prison system and just felt like people should know where this fasion originated. I know its common knowledge but I don’t think to many young guys know it. Nothing can change the facts of where this fasion originated from. However I dont think we should make laws about what you can and cant wear. I’m sure the trolls and chicken hawks love it.

  • sagger

Some guys sag at an acceptable level while others take it too far. I think it is ok if only 2-3 inches of the boxers are showing. But when it gets to be 8 inches of boxers showing then it is too much. I usually have 2 inches of my boxers showing and the only way that they would be visible is if i took off my shirt. when wearing shorts, guys don’t like them above their knees so they wear the shorts really low. when i wear shorts i have 5-6 inches of boxers showing. a lot of guys sag their shorts when in gym class and playing basketball.

  • Hannitized

    pparets,

I think you made a good point, but I am about to use your comment in a way that is not completely flattering.

The low-rider crowd is also typified by belligerance, intimidation, occasional violence and filthy language, all of which they flaunt in public. It’s all linked in the ‘hip-hop, in-your-face, fuck you mentality which so many think is ‘phat’.

Just so everyone knows, this is what a generalization looks like. THIS is snobbery. There may be some truth to this from a percentage standpoint, but you can apply that to rock and roll as well. Why the double standard?

Waaaaay back in 93, I lived with two African-American’s, one was a Lenny Kravitz type guy and the other was low-hangin pants-wearin hip hop guy. Both of them were cool guys, and completely different from one another.

The low hangin pant’s guy RARELY used foul language, was funny as hell and worked at a hospital. We used to joke about that pants style and refer to them as “poo-poo draws”.

I don’t know what your references are pparets, but the people I know would take offense to your condescension and generalization. Perhaps James would agree?

Or do you think I am being unfair in my criticism of your comment?

  • Bre

My question is why are these politicians getting paid for this nonsense?!? They gripe about not being able to pay teachers, not being to build more homeless shelters, not being to do this and do that…Well then quit wasting our time and money to debate complete nonsense. Look the other way, and in given time the fad will go away.

  • Pilgrim

This is another example of our lawmakers turning one of their pet peeves into a law.

While this stupid, moronic, foul fashion trend offends the crap out of me, too, I just don’t think the government has the right to legislate how we should wear the clothes we pay for. Don’t get me wrong – I hate the look. But, come on.

By this logic they could outlaw halter tops or micro-mini skirts on women. But they don’t. Why is that?

  • pparets

Hannitized: I would like to think you know exactly what I meant.

  • :(

The low-rider crowd is also typified by belligerance, intimidation, occasional violence and filthy language, all of which they flaunt in public. It’s all linked in the ‘hip-hop, in-your-face, fuck you mentality which so many think is ‘phat’.

So are you saying that they will become completely new people if they just pull their pants up? Just to let you know, there will still be belligerance, intimidation, occasional violence and filthy language, etc, except without the boxers showing. Maybe those gangsters will be able to run even faster now those pants wont be around there knees?

This law is completely unjust, $500 + 6months jail for LOW RIDING? People dont like seeing kids low ride so theyre gonna send them to JAIL?? Thats such a heavy punishment for such a trivial……annoyance, i cant even call it a crime. Now, it is completely legal to wear boxers in public, so why is putting pants over that a crime? I dont get it.

  • Remember The 1960′s

No offense to anyone but I am white, I am no low wage worker, and so this law doesn’t effect me in anyway BUT . . and I am just sick to death to hear of the man, wife and DAUGHTER that was arrested at a mall in West Palm Beach Florida today because the father was wearying his pants to low! I don’t like seeing saggy pants hanging practically down to the knees any more than the next guy, fines maybe I can condone, but how much is enough! I don’t think you appreciate the scope of such a law and what it can do to people, or, the next law that it may be proceeding that will could effect you . . .

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You’re right. It isn’t the government’s job to legislate fashion trends.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

He is named. Its State Rep. Derrick Shepherd.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    I’m with you Rick.

I sometimes think that the biggest problem with politicians isn’t that they’re greedy or corrupt. Its that by the time they reach the upper tiers of the political food chain they’ve been telling other people what to do for so long that they’re completely convinced that the average person can’t live their lives properly unless there is a law or policy for every little thing.

  • G man

are you people stupid? how would you react if your own son came downstairs one morning wearing his pants halfway down his ass? would you feel "proud"? how about introducing him to your country club friends? of course not. why? because its embarrasing. its a joke. just because michael jackson became "white" , doesn't mean every eminem wanabe can be black. when did it become cool to go to prison? i guess having your pants around your knees makes it easier to get a "boyfriend". try a job interview with saggy pants. wonder why you're un-employed? duh!!!!
