Lou Dobbs Calls Free-Market Economist “Complete Idiot” And “Jackass”

Free market backers like George Mason economist Alex Tabarrok and Benjamin Powell of the Independent Institute say that the best way to solve the illegal immigration problem is to let more immigrants in legally, which is something I’ve been saying for a while now as well.  Lou Dobbs responds by calling these men “complete idiots” and “jackasses.”

Because that’s how you win a debate.

I think I may actually be dumber now for having watched Dobbs’ response.

Regardless, there should be no denying at this point that the key to solving illegal immigration is making legal immigration easier (along with securing the border and actually forcing current laws against illegal immigration).  The only restrictions on legal immigration, I believe, should be basic screenings for national security and health concerns.  If a potential immigrant is not a terrorist or criminal and does not carry a dangerous communicable disease I say let them all in with no restriction on numbers.  As long as they come here, become Americans and take up the tax and regulatory burdens the rest of us citizens carry I see no problems with it.

Unlike many who argue this “free markets” approach to immigration, however, I do see serious problems with the current state of illegal immigration.  First and foremost, simply looking the other way on illegal immigration and/or granting amnesty to those who have come here illegally undermines our rule of law and shows a great deal of disrespect to the people whose representatives passed the current immigration laws in the first place.  I think our immigration laws need to be changed, but until they are changed they should absolutely be enforced.  And I will never support amnesty for those who thumbed their noses at our laws by coming here illegally.

Second, if we don’t require that people who come here become American and pledge some sort of fealty to our country and laws by becoming actual citizens we are going to end up with a sub-class of pseudo-citizens who are more interested in setting up Mexico del Norte than living as Americans.  Which is dangerous.  America’s great boon through out it’s history is it’s ability to assimilate people of all nationalities and cultures into it’s free society.  That assimilation doesn’t seem to be happening with a lot of illegals, and that’s troubling.

Third, Milt Friedman was right when he said that open immigration was not compatible with a welfare state.  While many illegal immigrants do come here to work, many also come here to leech off of our social programs.  We can’t have that, though really Friedman’s charge is more of an indictment of our nanny state mentality in this country than an argument against open immigration.

What he will have is a bigger gap in the number people paying into the government dole in the form of high taxes versus the number of worthless, free loading, sucking the life out of government from non-productive people.

I’m with you Rob.  Newt suggested a simple residency status check for all people picked up during a crime.  (Then deport, the hard part.)  This solves about 1/3 of the problem.
Make becoming legal much easier.  The cost in time and money is completely prohibitive especially if it involves more than one person.  This might solve another 1/3 of the problem.
The problem is huge but it seems like the first couple steps are fairly easy and may fix enough.

And since a number of cities refuse to do background checks for residency on criminals, deny Federal funding to any city or municipality that chooses not to participate!

Proof: “deny Federal funding to any city or municipality that chooses not to participate!”

I said that exact thing on a thread a day or two ago, reference the Gingrich plan that Rob embraces, but it will carry more weight if someone with your intellect and personal appeal, versus a moron like me makes the point.

No nearly absolute border control, no severe penalties for employers and no intention by Congress that any potential Democrat voter be deported, so it’s is all bovine excrement and a waste of tome arguing about. There is not now nor shall there be in the foreseeable futurte any desire in Congress to close our borders, deport illegal aliens or punish employers and the people are not demanding action, preferring to reelect their partisan choices instead.

These open-border idiots ARE jackasses!!!  Lou hit the nail on the head.  The illegals are a huge drain on the economy, are lowering wages, are destroying this country town by town, city by city, and there are so many criminals among them, it is unreal.

Just ask the people in California who have lost over 84 ov their trauma centers and hospitals due to catring to the whims of the illegals, delivering their illegitamate babies, and going broke doing it.

As I said, these open border idots ARE jackasses.

Sorry, but Callie 369 is absolutely right!

The back ground checks are as easy as some claim.
They are a federal data base and good luck gettting ice to respond to a call. But Newt is right, the Government could make it happen and this cities breaking the law should be prosecuted for making their cities sanctuary cities…

Dobbs is right. These guys are idiots.

Remember the guy with the charts and the marbles in the jar representing the costs on our social infrastructure that our economy would have to pay for.

We have built the best economy in the world and every one wants to come here. As soon as we let them all in, our economy will be driven downwards until it is equal to the other economies. Our goal is to raise other economies up through helping them install better transportation, communication, and educational infrastructures. We should benefit in the process. We have to better supervise our economic aid to other countries to make sure that it is spent on what is intended, not to make the rich in those countries richer.

We can not afford to have uncontrolled immigration in this country without suffering. Let’s level the playing field upwards not downwards.

Try to follow this example of what an open market does for us. I know of many cases, for a fact, where this is happening and has happened.

A foreign manufacturer, say Taiwan, sells goods to other manufacturers like computer motherboards or golf club shafts. The foreign company sets up and owns a U.S. corporation to make computers or golf clubs or whatever and supplies it with its own products. Other required stock is also bought from foreign corporations which the owners of the primary corporation also have some kind of interest or friendship in. In the case of Taiwan, most of the owners of the various suppliers went to Taiwan University together.

As the U.S. Corporation grows, it hires mostly immigrants, many illegal, from its owner’s country who even exports people to take the open jobs. In many cases management helps the immigrants get phony documentation when they can’t otherwise qualify. As the U.S. corporation begins to make money, the foreign owner raises its prices making sure that the U.S. Corporation continues to operate at a loss and doesn’t have to pay taxes.

The money that would have been U.S. tax revenue ends up in Taiwan. This works because paying taxes on profits is much more expensive than covering a 5% loss.

In some cases, where the U.S. Corporation has done very well, the foreign parent allows it to make enough of a profit to have a successful IPO. Guess who owns the stock? Money from the IPO ends up in Taiwanese bank accounts.

This has become SOP and there are thousands of foreign owned corporations doing $10 to $100 million,  operating at a loss, not paying taxes, hiring immigrants who also don’t pay taxes, sending any would be profits out of the country.

This country is being raped in more ways than one thanks to an open market.

This country is being raped in more ways than one thanks to an open market.

That’s quite an assertion which is not backed up by anything you wrote.  Virtually, all major corporations are multi-national these days doing business throughout the world and employing people also around the world and all of this could not have been accomplished without open markets.  Even China after keeping its borders and markets closed for many years came to that realization because of the deprivations and lack of advancements cause by their government controlled markets.

Open markets are not perfect but they are miles ahead of managed markets.  Only an avowed marxist would think otherwise.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

This makes sense, which is more than I can say for your following comment about your concept of open markets, which is pure gibberish.

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!

Rob: As a sovereign state, we don’t owe legal immigrant status to anyone, unless their contribution to this country is greater than their cost to be here.  The fact that the present immigration invasion lowers the labor price in every market in which they participate is elementary proof that they constitute an oversupply.  People who want to come here should have to earn that privilege.  We are not the host for the parasites of the world.
