Live Earth’s Huge Carbon Footprint

Turns out Al Gore’s concerts may do more harm than good according to this piece from Doug Heye:

It has been estimated that between the actual concerts, web streaming and television broadcasting, the Live Earth concert series could produce as much as 200,000 metric tons of carbon, after the conversions from electricity have been calculated. In other words, the Gore concerts could produce more carbon dioxide than was produced by all of Afghanistan in 2006.

I think that if a closer look were taken at this series of concerts they’re likely going to do more to further the cause of putting lots and lots of money in Al Gore’s pockets than any sort of environmental initiative.

Check out this US Carbon Footprint Map, an interactive United States Carbon Footprint Map, illustrating Greenest States. This site has all sorts of stats on individual State energy consumptions, demographics and State energy offices.

The concert reaches two billion people. Suppose just half of those who hear the message decide to make changes that reduce their consumption by only 2%.

Dear Jeff, I think the 2 billion figure is a political propaganda like the event itself… 2 Billion is ONE-THIRD OF THE WHOLE WORLD’s POPULATION. Inluding billions of people who are illiterate, malnourished, cannot afford a television, or can make no sense of the word ‘Climate Change’. And it is not that the educated world is very aware… Most Americans do not even know of anything by the name of “Live Earth”. Those who do, mostly think it was a concert where Bon Jovi or some other artist performed. So much for Awareness!!

For those of you who criticize the amount of energy used for the concert and flying the performers around the world: Lets do the math.

The concerts could produce up to 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide (The Guardian estimates 50,000 tons). The average American produces 8 tons through energy consumption and other means, per year. The concert reaches two billion people. Suppose just half of those who hear the message decide to make changes that reduce their consumption by only 2%. That equals

    8tons X 0.02 (percent) X 1,000,000,000 people = 160,000,000 tons CO2 saved from the atmosphere per year.

Lets balance that: 50,000 or 200,000 tons vs. 160,000,000 tons.

    Get it?

No, kids, you don’t get it. Al Gore is going to use all of the proceeds from LiveEarth to buy carbon credits to offset the CO2.

The really sweet thing about it is he’s sending all the money to his own non-profit corporation to buy them! So the more CO2 that gets generated over this past 24 hours, the more money his “Alliance for Climate Protection” makes.

Really, the guy is absolutely brilliant.

He is certainly raking it in.

Yes, jeffie, lets us do the math. Or not. The Goreacle has declared that all debate and scientific research is over. Therefore The Goreacle and all his little minions can jet about the world, spewing pollution, using petroleum based plastics and rubber and pharmaceuticals and synthetic material and agriculture products to their hearts content.
The Goreacle puts more pollution into the atmosphere each day than 1,000 real humans do. Prove me wrong.

Gore is green all right. Green with cold hard cash.

  • Dr. Evil

    Dear Jeff:
Were the concerts only taking place in the US? What good does it to have a concert in places where those people (supposedly) already have a low carbon footprint? Will Americans be traveling abroad to justify the concerts?

I wonder if they took into account all the livestock emissions in Afganistan……

  • 2Hotel9

And Dr Evil? I don’t know. You seem only quasi-evil to me.

Gore has helped us discover his single handed carbon footprint the size of Russia. his supporters best eat him, before he fuels his next rock tour with them… or eats them all by himself… and a couple of those delectable danishes.
