Liberals Now Blaming Minnesota Bridge Collapse On Iraq

Kind of the same as blaming it on Bush, but whatever.

Their point is “We’re spending too much money on Iraq so now we don’t have any money to fix our roads and bridges!”  Which is total nonsense.

It was recently announced that the entire world spent $1.2 trillion on military and wars.  America, by itself, spent over $1.3 trillion on social entitlements alone, most of that being welfare, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

In a single year.

This isn’t an issue of the government not having enough money to fix roads and bridges.  This is about our politicians spending on the wrong priorities.  Our infrastructure goes ignored while Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy demand that the government pick up the tab for health care for the entire country.

It makes no sense.

Shouldn’t they save their accusations for when they have an official documented cause of the collapse? Although, it seems easy to blame it on money, I find it hard to believe that if the bridge was faulty due to that reason why was it being used?
There is(was)also a railway that was part of that structure and a freight train was using the bridge at the same time.
Until further investigation into the cause I find it irrational for the public to automatically seek fault or liability. Perhaps they should focus their energy on assisting with the present situation.
I don’t know who Ed Schultz is but with the publicity he received for quickly placing blame ... his antagonistic mannerism could have been put to a more positive use and actually helped the present victims of this disaster. I see very little benefits from people like him.

If the libs had any sense about trying to gain advantage over this (as morbid as that is, not a single funeral having taken place etc.) they’d point to Ted Stevens’ bridge to nowhere.  Of course that might open up an examination of their own proclivities with the pork.

It is, of course, a dumb argument, and why it’s being advanced by liberals.

Chris on August 2, 2007 at 09:31 pm

I wonder how long it will take for some imaginative, self-righteous Democrat to blame the bridge collapse on “global warming”.  Tuesday or Wednesday?

They’re in the “blame everything on my dissatisfaction with the war” mindset. Simpletons think this way and you’ve just named a bunch of simpletons.

The only thing you can really do with simpletons is to point them out and laugh. They don’t respond to reason or logic. They’re emotional driven creatures.

Image is everything and perception equals reality.

Minnesota DOT:
“We thought we had done all we could,” said Daniel L. Dorgan,[liberal democrat] bridge engineer at the department’s bridges division. “Obviously something went terribly wrong.”

In 1982, a bridge inspector [liberal democrat] looked at the Mianus River Bridge in Greenwich, Conn., and did not see the metal-fatigued pin that would break nine months later, collapsing three lanes of Interstate 95 and killing three.

In 1987, a New York Thruway bridge near Amsterdam, N.Y., also had a clean bill of health, but inspectors [liberal democrats] had never gone underwater into the Schoharie Creek to look at the bridge’s footings, where flood waters had scoured the concrete base. When the footings slipped, the bridge fell. Ten people died.

From Slate: [here]

Quick, name a politician from Minnesota. Here are the ones that spring to my mind: Paul Wellstone, Jesse Ventura, Walter Mondale, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy. What all these men have in common is that none is a Republican. In fact, except for the independent Ventura, they’re all Democrats.

Expand the pool to famous Minnesotans in general, and you get similar results: Comedian and Air America host Al Franken; public radio’s Garrison Keillor, author of the new book Homegrown Democrat; and, of course, Bob Dylan.

So, who are the saying is to be blamed?

Politicians like to get “out in front” of a story, so that they can make their pronouncements and make an impression (however erroneous) before anything as dubious as the “facts” come into play!

Thye’re hoping that the voting public will retain the impression of their outrage and blame. If they screw the pooch royally, they claim that they could not have known they were so wrong, because all the facts weren’t in at that time to disprove them! (Ergo, it was an honest mistake!!)

That way, they build lasting memes like Bush & Katrina, Bush & Iraq, etc.

Bush gives Minnesota and Nation the Katrina Treatment!

August 2, 2007 (LPAC)—In response to the collapse of the bridge across the Mississippi, President Bush is offering the horror-struck nation the “Katrina treatment.” In a statement in the Rose Garden, Bush said he was “in prayer for those who suffered,” and pledged the federal government would “respond robustly” - and then launched directly into a diatribe against the Congress for trying to spend too much money.

As LaRouche noted today, this Minnesota disaster will be very tough on Bush, as the nation remembers his utter failure after Katrina, and will now be seized by fear every time they drive over a bridge.

Ed Schultz Whines About His Poor Ratings
By Rob on June 26, 2007 at 10:25 am Click on the link to the left.

[great video included]

And as a typical liberal, [Shultz] blames the fact that his ratings are far inferior to those of conservative talkers not on the fact that people are choosing not to listen to him and his fellow liberals but rather on the idea that government isn’t doing enough to force people to listen [i.e. The Fairness Doctrine]to liberal talk radio.

Joel on August 3, 2007 at 06:10 am

The amount of federal money they received has nothing to do with the local agencies allowing the bridge to pass inspection and remain open (if given the fact that it is solely fault of maintenance)
As for Mr Schultz, perhaps, it’s time for him to receive a little more attention from the public after all.

There is nothing like coming to neo-con country to find out “TRUTH” about liberals. Liberals don’t blame the Bridge on Iraq. That is, of course, absurd(inconsistent with reason or logic).

Although there is something absurd about Iraq. It’s why yellow-cake was the reason for starting the war and four years later - nobody has seen “hide nor hair” of yellow cake. Liberals never said that Iraq had WMDs. The Bush team said that.

The liberals did not march the country off to a “JUST” war. The Bush team did. Liberals don’t think “out of the box” - the bush team does. Liberals don’t try to fool all of the people all of the time - but somebody needs a logic assist when listening to the Bush team.

But I understand that one needs to do something to maintain ones sense of being a value to the country and reality must be ignored to do that.

bezelt on August 3, 2007 at 07:05 am

It would be really interesting to have a liberal pop over and have something intelligent or useful to say for once.

Oh well, what’re you going to do?

Anyway, this is all very silly. The fact that politics has even become a part of this already is absurd, and the fact that the left has been so quick to point their fingers at the Right and everything that the Right has done since the days of George Washington is just a bunch of crap. They are a bunch of babies who can’t see past their own blind hatred enough to see the human factor in this whole thing. There are still bodies in the water, and while Minnesotans are struggling to deal with this, the left is busy trying to pin the blame.

arclightzero on August 3, 2007 at 07:51 am

Bezelt,

I had not heard the term “Master Muckmakers” before.  Is it your very own invention?  Perhaps you could explain further just what you had in mind.

Were you thinking of unindicted ABSCAM co-conspirator Democrat Jack Murtha who has spent his congressional career throwing multi-million dollar Defense contracts and earmarks at compaign contributors who happen to also be clients of his lobbyist brother Kip?

Or perhaps you had California’s Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein in mind who shoveled hundreds of millions of federal contracts at her husband’s several companies.

Maybe it was Louisiana Democrat William “Cold Cash” Jefferson you were thinking of, or maybe West Virginia Democrat Alan Mullohan, who has made himself a multi-millionaire by taking kick-backs from bogus “non-profits” which he has funded out of federal tax money.

Or did you have Democrat Harry Reid in mind, who takes his rewards from local developers in the form of sweetheart real estate deals, in exchange for his efforts to get federal agencies to swap prime tracts for useless karst.

Despite the smarmy rantings of pompous, liberal asses such as you, there is plenty of corruption on both sides of the partisan aisle.  The only difference really is that those on the Right have a habit of resigning in disgrace when they’re found out.  Democrats tend to view themselves as above questions of mere morality, or disgrace, so they cling to office like leeches in a jungle swamp.

Anna,

There is(was)also a railway that was part of that structure and a freight train was using the bridge at the same time.

It was only a vehicle bridge.  The freight train was going under the bridge on the north side of the Mississippi as it flows at that point.  The bridge fell on part of the train.  It was also on the opposite side of where the collapse of the bridge started.

I’ve driven over that bridge many a time and a friend drove over it several hours before.  Fortunately so far, that’s as close as I’ve come to this tragedy.  And I hope it stays that way.

I’ve also been under that bridge a few times on the West River Parkway.  It’s a nice drive up to, and past, downtown Minneapolis.  I’ve looked at the structure a few times but now wish I’d paid more attention…

Can you give an argument that supports this assertion? Keep in mind that every time there are “tax cuts for the rich” the federal intake soars because economic activity just got cheaper.

You should also explain why you think you’re entitled to other people’s money. Keep in mind that this is a child’s position.

I am saying that you need to disengage IRAQ from THE BRIDGE because the two have absolutely nothing to do with one another. In fact, politics should be disengaged from the bridge all together. Isn’t it about time you liberals pull your heads out of your asses and realize that not everything that happens in this world is political? Disasters happen. Accidents happen. Mother nature happens. None of these things are a result of the evil Republicans out there. This “conservative bogeymen in the closet” that you people all seem to believe in is nothing more than the result of a bunch of people who cannot deal with reality and need to feel good about themselves by placing blame on everybody else. You can apply that to global warming, you can apply that to the bridge collapsing… You can apply that almost entirely across the board when it comes to you liberals out there. Get real! Shit happens and it’s not always the Republican’s fault, no matter how much you feel like pointing the finger.

And furthermore…

I don’t know where you got your information that said “liberals” are less than caring about America. I believe you got your parties mixed up.

I have my parties down just fine. All liberals care about are their own agendas and special interest groups. I have yet to see a single liberal out there who has had America’s best interest in mind these days. The general public of America is never of any interest to liberals. Don’t think for a minute that running out and taking care of every “protected” minority group, the poor and the environment makes you care about America as a whole. The average American gets shafted on a very regular basis by the liberals in government… You think that just because conservatives put America first that we don’t care about America? Check your head, man. I don’t know who you think you’re preaching to…

If we only consider one of many Marxist social engineering schemes, the so-called “War on Poverty”, which drained 11 trillion dollars from the taxpayers, it would have been enough to rebuild every bridge in America many times over.  My “healthcare” reference was to those killed and injured in the MN bridge collapse, and the potential deaths and injuries from the rest of our infrastructure which has been starved for money due to its redistribution into social engineering schemes, mostly by the Dems.

Bezelt,

If you had actually read what I wrote, you might realize that I specifically noted that there is plenty of corruption on BOTH sides of the aisle.  It seems you disagree with that assessment, so perhaps you’ll be good enough to point out which of the Democrats on my short list are not the corrupt sleaze bags that I’ve suggested.  Everything I’ve noted is on the public record, but if you have some evidence to offer to the contrary, however gratuitous, please do so.

It would help if you were a bit older and more experienced, as you’d realize the importance of courtesy.  In this case, the specific courtesy of specific address.  I haven’t called you a “liar” as I am willing to be persuaded that you are merely ignorant, rather than malevolently intended.

I would suggest, however, that you leave the subject of Joe Wilson to those who know full well what they are talking about.  His lies have been so well documented for so long as to hardly warrant any sort of rational discussion… at least among the adults.

Finally, there is this bit of hilarious nonsense,

Liberals don’t make good name callers. Liberals don’t need to.

Anyone who has ever read DU, Daily Kos, or the MoveOn.org website knows just how ridiculous this is.  No doubt you think differently.  But then, the idea of a liberal actually thinking is one of those humorous oxymorons that makes thoughtful conservatives smile.

“Trying to mold the world into our image”? What?!

Our inner cities are going to the dogs, our transportation infrastructure is crumbling, our educational system is falling behind, our communications infrastructure is decaying, and our government is corrupt and ignoring the Constitution.

Minus the communications infrastructure (which is fine, it’s just hindered by government), the rest of what you named are all things that government controls. Think about that as you look on at your peers who are asking for government health care. They look pretty silly asking for it viewed from that light, don’t they?
