Liberals Have No Reason To Feel Triumphant

You know what’s grating? All this liberal gloating about the President’s/Republicans low poll numbers of late.
What these people don’t get is that while many Americans (myself included) are fed up with the Republicans and the way they’ve conducted themselves in office it doesn’t mean that we’re embracing liberalism. Far from it.
Let me summarize things for you:
It is a fact that Republicans control the White House, the House, the Senate, the majority of the state governorships and the majority of the state legislatures. It is also a fact that the vast majority of Republican politicians who hold office right now campaigned, and were elected, as conservatives. Finally, it is a fact that a lot of these politicians (at least at the federal level) have abandoned the conservative ideals of limited government and fiscal responsibility since getting into office.
So what do we conclude from this series of events? That Americans are rejecting conservatism and embracing liberalism?
Hardly.
Americans are fed up with Republicans because they haven’t been acting like the conservatives they elected. Democrats are reaping the benefits of this frustration because, in our two party system, when people are ticked off at one party they tend to default to the other.
The key to Republicans staying in power is for them to re-embrace the conservative principles that put them in power in the first place. Acting like a bunch of liberals is a sure way to see the real liberals get back into power.

Bat: Problem is, that call to arms is only rhetorical.  Other than the Murtha/Pelosi "cut and run" propsal that was literally blown out of the water last month, there has not been a serious policy alternative offered by the Democrats in the past 5 years.

I agree. I don’t know what the Democrats are waiting for. They should be on every Sunday pundit show taking advantage of the Republicans’ many problems and offerign serious policy alternatives. Sitting back and hoping the Republican meltdown will be enough to propel them back into a majority party doesn’t cut it with me.

Rob: Did you even bother to read the rest of the post?  Because I’m pretty sure that I’m criticizing the GOP for spending too much money and ignoring the interests of their constituents.

Yes, I read your post in it’s entirety word-for-word. The platitudes regarding Republicans acting as conservatives is a nice concept – and any elected Republican official can use that as a rallying cry to the base, but among the majority it’s still the incompetence, stupid(*).

Where’s the gloating in the linked post? I couldn’t find any. It’s more a call to arms for Democrats find their spines, get off their asses and start acting like an opposition party.

    I agree with him.

The rest of your story is nonsense. Americans are fed up with Republicans because they are incompetent at governance, showing more concern for their donors that finance their money-driven campaigns than the people that pull the lever in the polling booth.

It is all well and good to criticize the GOP for what they have, or have not done while in power.  Conservatives have been doing that from the very beginning of the Bush administration (remember the steel import quotas?  Harriet Myers?)  But without any sort of clear alternative policies to offer, the Democrats are just blowing smoke.

The ideological lethargy and lack of principles, on both sides of the aisle, is simply intolerable.

Murtha’s proposal was never voted on.  It was replaced by a simplistic version that gave us nothing for which to hold our representative accountable.

The basic fact is that most Americans aren’t political, and tend to regard both parties with skepticism and/or loathing.  Since there are only two parties, however, those two parties are going to trade control of the government.
