In a word HUBRIS. I can think of several others, but not as nearly as polite. Overall, the UK spent too many years in the dessert and obviously still have then heads and politics in the sand.

The larger question is this: Why, throughout history, have liberals been awed and fascinated by dictators? The left has swooned over Fidel Castro, Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler, the Ayatolla, Hugo Chavez, Napoleon, Franco and Mao… just to name a few. The answer?  Liberals have never really trusted republican democracy because it doesn’t guarantee liberal/leftist outcomes. They brood over the ability of the ‘unwashed masses’ to make choices they disapprove of. The left is appalled that so many state referendums have voted to ban gay marriage. Hence, even in our own republic, liberals, more often than not, look for dictatorial solutions to problems - “you WILL reduce emissions!” - and favor courts above legislatures, because courts have near-dictatorial power to impose its will. The only states where gay marriage is legal are those whose courts have ordered it so.

Liberals have never really trusted republican democracy because it doesn’t guarantee liberal/leftist outcomes.

While true, I think that the liberals go far beyond that as they not only distrust republican democracy but fear it as well.  That fear translates to hate which translates to attempts to totally eliminate republican democracy.  Winning through liberal courts is too slow for many liberals which is why they favor totalitarian governments.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

Had Hitler not defeated the Marxists in Germany, the UK and America could not have re-built Germany, as suggested by the fate of East Germany. To Hitler, America and the UK owe their victory in the Cold War against Marxist USSR.

Every perceptive American and UK patriot clearly understands why Ronald Reagan, representing America, paid the highest respects to Germany by visiting the famous national cemetery at Bitburg. The notorious attempts by failed Marxists, Neo-Marxists, and Crypto-Neo-Marxists to revise the history of World War II are transparently politically self-serving, and make fools only of credulous and ignorant persons.
