6. Almost everyone will agree that we live in a deeply troubled society. One of the most widespread manifestations of the craziness of our world is leftism, so a discussion of the psychology of leftism can serve as an introduction to the discussion of the problems of modern society in general.

7. But what is leftism? During the first half of the 20th century leftism could have been practically identified with socialism. Today the movement is fragmented and it is not clear who can properly be called a leftist. When we speak of leftists in this article we have in mind mainly socialists, collectivists, “politically correct” types, feminists, gay and disability activists, animal rights activists and the like. But not everyone who is associated with one of these movements is a leftist. What we are trying to get at in discussing leftism is not so much a movement or an ideology as a psychological type, or rather a collection of related types. Thus, what we mean by “leftism” will emerge more clearly in the course of our discussion of leftist psychology (Also, see paragraphs 227-230.)

By the way, conservative, has the root “conserve” in it. Progressive, has “progress”. There is a reason for it.

And from a dictionary:

Conservative: disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.

Conservatives now tend to advocate free-market ideology since it has been shown to keep poor people poor, so “preserving existing conditions”. Religion, another favorite with conservatives, slows cultural change too. And the military’s role is to protect existing institutions.

Likwidshoe, why would free-market policies increase socio-economic mobility (apart from in the obvious downwards direction)?

If you seriously believe that “free-market” policies improve socio-economic mobility, you should go and do some research. You’ll find that:
1/ The USA has amongst the lowest economic mobility out of the nations within the OECD (poor social programs, and very expensive healthcare, the single biggest cause of bankruptcy).
2/ Nations with extremely poor social programs have extremely low economic mobility and a large percentage of people who are working are still below the poverty line. This applies to free-market economies especially. (Many, many examples throughout Asia, Africa, and Central and South America).
3/ Nations with extensive social programs have high economic mobility.

Also, Adam Smith stated that the sole goal of business is to serve the consumer. This is why many progressives support democratic means to ensure this. Unfortunately the common approach is via central govt, which is often cumbersome.

And liberals like to keep nonliberals alive so they can torture them with liberal stupidity like hate crime legislation (a clear violation of equal protection under the law), the race card (“YOU didn’t vote for Obama because YOU’RE a RACIST”),and an uncanny intolerance regarding difference of opinion (“WAA! Err America tanked, so we need to invoke the ‘Fairness’ Doctrine against Rush Limbaugh because he’s successful!”).

See, I can make fun of extremists on the left just like you can poke fun of conservatives. And yes, liberals have been known to commit murder too. But of course, intellectual honesty is more than you can handle, isn’t it?
