Left Quickly Using Up All Known Reserves Of Profanity

According to Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit, there is now scientific proof that the left blogosphere uses foul language far more frequently than the right. Hoft found that there is about an 18-to-1 use of profanity among lefties compared to righties. It would have been more like 180-to-1, but Ace has been single-handedly making sure the right does not get shut out of this game (thanks Ace!). If it weren't for Ace, and normally civil blogs quoting Amanda Marcotte, there may have been virtually no profanity use among the top righty blogs at all. Actually some of the commenters have taken Jim to task for his methodology, such as a need to factor in word counts and other such factors. I am pretty sure this is one experiment that is going to show similar results regardless of the methodologies used.

The left is leaving a huge profanity footprint - they should be buying offsets from the rest of us.

P.S. Perhaps the right is just so much more efficient in their use of profanity. They make it really count. Like Dick Cheney, for example - he throws one little f-bomb, and no one ever seems to forget it.

P.P.S. Plus the guy shoots only one lawyer and no one ever seems to forget that, either.

I don’t like the math.  Is the counting on the post or in the comments?  I would also normalize per number of posts on a web site to accomodate mature sites with many postings.  I would also like a word count, not just if a word appears on a page.  It would also be nice to filter out if a word was written by the poster, or quoted.  (ie, discussing Hillary’s Fing Jew Bastard comment , is different than flat out calling someone a name.  Having those numbers on hand could tell a good story.

Remember, profanity is the crutch of the inarticulate mother-fucker.

I don’t think the comments were counted, because if they were this site may have tipped the scales.

I don’t curse in the posts, but some of you bastards are real potty mouths.

Is “mother” considered half a word?

A troll is someone who only wants to stir up trouble, not have an honest debate.  Some signs that a poster is a troll:
* Dodges questions from other posters * Refuses to give sources
* When one of its arguments is shown to be false, either ignores the proof or moves the goalposts.  Heh. (From the LGF faq)

Proof on March 1, 2007 at 01:23 pm

The link says that they counted the profanity in comments as well… so lefty trolls on rightie sites may be scewing the numbers as well.

Still, if one person on a long post drops the F Bomb (As I did earlier), that is way different than EVERYBODY having a potty mouth (as some threads devolve into)

I tried posting comments over on the huffington site. My post name was “Harry Flashman” and I tried to counter their left wing hysteria with some facts and common sense. They blocked me after about a week. Well, to be fair, they flagged each of my comments for “moderation” and then wouldn’t post anything that they didn’t agree with. Unlike this site, where any half-wit leftie can come argue his point of view. As it should be.

Anyway, back the the meat of the thread, the profanity used on that lefty site was amazing. They seemed unable to communicate without it. Rude bastards. To sum it up, I didn’t get a very good impression of their intellectual abilities.

So fuck them.

I hope you’re not being sarcastic Mark.  You may not agree with me or many of the other commenters here, and our debates undoubtedly get heated and filled with invective, but you’ve got to admit that you’ve been free to write whatever posts you want and post whatever comments you want.

There is no censorship here.  Unless you start posting porn or spamming or something.

Contrary to proper parenting techniques, I tell my kids to swear when the situation calls for it.  There definitely is a situation for each and every swear word, and if used properly, will help get your point across.  Save these words for special occasions and they will have maximal impact.  Don’t wear them out or you will not be able to reach into your back pocket and unleash a real zinger at Grandma.

RealManOfGenius on March 1, 2007 at 02:19 pm

Mark D,

Your attempts at sarcasm are every bit as pitiful as the rest of your commentary… including those subjects which you yourself have chosen.  Truth is, there hasn’t been as virulent an example of that “half-wit leftie” here in months, and on an intellectual level at least, your presence here is without question the easiest to overlook.

Hats off to SA for allowing different perspectives on the issues of today.
I’ve been blocked and censored on other right wing blogs and to me thats not what blogs are all about.
Again great job

Like yourself, most lefties resort to profanity as a substitute for reasoned debate, of which they are incapable.  In other words, it’s worthless filler.

Profanity is, by definition, crude and stupid. Those who use profanity in place of argument prefer to express themselves in crude and stupid terms. I take them to be, therefore, crude and stupid.

BTW, the only time profanity appears on Michelle Malkin’s site is when she quotes the lunatic left attacking her or others in the most ugly of ways.

Better to be profane than depraved.

It’s amazing the moral barometer in this country. Janet Jackson can whip out a dust-filled boob and the country goes into hysterics; some TV show staring Kiefer Sutherland can be as violent as R-rated movies 10 years ago and nobody says ‘boo.’

Now, understand, I don’t find either objectionable, but I do find the reaction to both questionable.

Why do we Americans demonize sex and glorify violence?

That’s something I’ve brought up before, *, when Hillary was on a jihad against the Grand Theft Auto folks about some secret code that let the character in the game have sex with a hooker.

Nobody said boo about the game, in which you play a character who murders, steals, assaults, etc., until there was some sex.  Then all the parents who bought the violent thing for their 15-year-olds went into a tizzy.

I don’t think anyone in this thread is particularly upset at the idea of profanity.  The larger point here is that, in terms of internet debate, the left tends to turn to the name-calling a lot quicker than the right.

In general.

My mom had some little boys from her church come over for a parents weekend. She took them to the grocery store and let them get anything they wanted. AND then she took them to the video store and they asked if the could get Porkys. She said SURE get what ever you want… They got home & my mom & dad notice how quiet they were. Yet there would be some quiet laughing and SHHH’s.  Well, Porkys was not what she thought.  Most of the parents were really nice about it. BUT a few were ready to bite her head off.

You also have to keep in mind that the context:  Nudity during the afternoon Superbowl is less acceptable because parents who choose to monitor what their kids watch typically don’t expect this sort of thing during a football game.  24 is known to be violent and (I’m guessing) includes disclaimers that there is graphic content.  24 is also shown later when young children are less likely to be viewing.

At least we use profanity in a proper sentence structure, damnit!

If you think Dick Cheney has only said the f-word once, you are delusional.  Same with plenty of other public figures you probably admire.  I’m sure Bush has/does, and he’s a committed Christian.

I can’t believe the intellectual dishonesty in a statement saying profanity = stupid; apparently you think Cheney, Ace, and the guys at Blackfive are stupid, and I take offense to that sentiment.  Saying profanity = stupid is just as ridiculous a strawman as leftards saying no profanity = uptight wankers.  Although in some cases, apparently they have a point.

Didn’t Bush call some reporter named Clymer an asshole?

Personally, I don’t think cursing is that bad.  It’s just dumb when it gets gratuitous.

Beth,

I believe most individuals, Left or Right, Christian of not, would agree that while not all profane speech is objectionable, gratuitous use of profanity in place of reasoned argument with the sole, apparent intent of offending another party, is most certainly immature and offensive.  A profanity laced tirade, as is so common among internet commenter on the Left, would be a case in point, and indeed, in many such cases there is probably every good reason to wonder whether these people are capable of any other behavior.

The other point I’d like to make is that most often the point of profanity is too provide a harsh emphasis to a point being made or an attitude being conveyed.  All too often, those who indulge themselves in tireless tirade simply don’t understand that whatever point they were trying to make is lost in their vile spew.  If every other word out of my mouth is MF this or that, I’ve effectively lost whatever shock value I might have aspired to, and am, instead, merely illiterate and boring.

Speaking as a half witted leftie I would like to say that I appreciate the existence of SA, the motley crew of denizens and visitors and especially Rob who, despite being a conservative from Minot, has always run a fair and square site.

I also think that counting the number of expletives in blog posts and comments is silly and reveals little about the relationship between political orientation and use of profanity.

Mike A,

As a self-proclaimed “half-witted leftie” you have managed to get it half right.  The first half of your comment is most certainly correct.

The second half is nonsense.  In your particular case, neither self-serving or self-deluding… but nonsense all the same.

Mike A., doncha think that the rate at which one uses profanity might be indicative of one’s attitude towards it?  Come on, even a “half witted leftie” ought to be able to figure that one out--it does happen to be a fact that liberals on the internet seem to have a knack for using language that embarasses the truck drivers and sailors of the world, language reminiscent (I’ve read) of Hillary Clinton.  :^)

But seriously, here’s a depressing thought; the left won the last set of elections, despite the fact that the extensive use of Anglo-Saxon verbiage indicates a lack of thought on the part of the speaker.  Doesn’t bode well for our culture, IMO.
