Led Zeppelin Reunion Question: Should They Really Be Playing Together Again

Tonight a reunited Led Zeppelin will play together again (minus deceased drummer John Bonham who will be replaced by his son Jason) for the first time in 40 years.  Now while I wouldn’t blink an eye at selling a kidney for tickets (anyone willing to take me up on this can use the contact link on the right sidebar), I’m a little leery.

I think Led Zeppelin is one of the best bands of all time, but I also think they’ve benefited tremendously from the mystique that has come to surround their group which disbanded while in its prime.  If they’d gone on making albums with declining public appeal and had faded into the fabric of pop culture as most bands do, would the have had that mystique?  As much as I love their music, I’m not sure they would, and I’m a little afraid that a mediocre performance from an aged Led Zeppelin might burst the bubble of that mystique and leave people wondering what it is they liked all along.

I’ve got flashes of Jim Palmer trying to come back with the Orioles at age 46 and getting shelled by players half his age, and it isn’t pretty.

What do you guys think?  Is the comeback a good idea?

I’m excited about it, too, although I guess I can’t say I’m the greatest fan since I was more surprised to know that all but one of them were still alive…

Anyway, I think it is a good idea. About the only concerts I go to are those oldies but goodies and most of these bands, including ZZ Top and the Guess Who, are just as good as any “young, hot” bands and I would dare say as good as they ever were. They definitely put on a better performance. I wouldn’t expect less of Led Zeppelin. In addition, they have great songs with great lyrics going for them. Not many of today’s bands have that. Oh, and Jimmy Page can still shred with the best of ‘em.

In the meantime, I may consider selling my car to get the chance to go myself…

HELL.  YES.

HECK YES! Musicians are different than athletes. How much fun would that be?

I’ll have to disagree with you Zsa Zsa only because Bob Dylan easily proves your theory wrong. Some times retirement is a wonderful thing.
If the performer can still perform ... sure go for it but, everything gets worn out eventually. hehe! smile

Pitcher for the Orioles.

Is nobody else here a baseball fanatic?

Thank you, Bat.

By the way, Bob Dylan doesn’t suck even now.

Bob Dylan’s voice has always been difficult to listen to… a cross between a castrated Willie Nelson and acrylic nails across a blackboard.  It was worse when he was younger.

Oh Rob.. don’t be silly! Bob Dylan has lost his vocal talent. He’s one of my favorite artists but, I’m willing to admit his prime has past.

for the first time in 40 years.

So, the last time they played together was 2 years before their first album came out?  That’s what you get for relying on foxnews, dipshit.

Tonight a reunited Led Zeppelin will play together again (minus deceased drummer John Bonham who will be replaced by his son Jason) for the first time in 40 years.

They disbanded in 1980, but played a reunion show in 1988 as well as another show in 1995 to celebrate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Also, musically, the band should be able to perform. Page and Plant have done extensive solo work since the band disbanded.

Bob Dylan has lost his vocal talent.

Anna, I’m a Dylan fan but let’s be honest, he never had much vocal talent to begin with.

Bob Dylan sucks. And I might have been excited about a Led Zeppelin reunion TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO.

Haven’t any of you people discovered anything new since 1981?

Pastafarian on December 11, 2007 at 09:58 am

Whole lot of good jams have hit the airwaves during the last 20 years. Some of these kids got it going on, then there is the other 95% of the crap you have to listen inbetween. But that is how rock&roll has always been!

As the kidz I shoot with say,"Old music is for old people.”, then again, the youngest of them is 27.

Who will Led Zeppelin have as an opening act on their 2008 US tour???
The rumors have finally been silenced: Plant has personally tapped his illegitimate son’s band--MEAN VENUS--to open all 2008 shows.
MEAN VENUS’ lead singer, J, when recently interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine, spoke of his utter disbelief at the prospect:
“I only found out he [Plant] was my dad a few years ago.
My mum hid it from me for the majority of my life. So to actually be going on the road with my Dad is bloody outrageous!”.....
