Latest Defense Of Obama From The LA Times: Americans Are Too Dumb To Appreciate Intellectuals

First the LA Times was telling us that it’s racist to call Obama an elitist.  Now the Times is telling us that Americans are upset about Obama’s comments because they’re too dumb to appreciate his intellectualism.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m beginning to think she might have had a point. As dumb as things were back then, it’s fair to suggest today’s culture is even dumber. Granted, the police aren’t raiding highbrow cultural events and arresting anyone who uses a three-syllable word, but something uncannily similar is playing out, minute by minute, on television and the Internet. With political discourse reduced to screaming contests and actual news eclipsed by exclusive and shocking footage of celebrities without makeup, we’ve become not only impatient with but downright opposed to the kinds of ideas that can’t be reduced to a line on a screen crawl or a two-sentence blog entry.

What’s more, a lot of people who harbor an intolerance for complexity see it not as a character flaw but a cognitive virtue. That’s because they’ve fallen into the trap of believing that complicated ideas (”complicated” now constituting anything that requires reading, watching or listening to in its entirety) are the purview of the “elite.”

The effect of that trap has been on a continuous loop in recent days, following Barack Obama’s ill-chosen remarks about bitter rural Americans clinging to guns and religion. The takeaway, of course, is that this sentiment proves once and for all that Obama is an elitist fatally out of touch with the average American. But in deference to my onetime dinner companion, let me ask this: Is he vulnerable to the out-of-touch charge because he is an elitist, or because he is usually (even if not in this case) comfortable with and in command of nuanced ideas? Is he bashable because he’s a snob or because he’s an intellectual?

Intolerance for complexity?  I don’t think there was anything all that complex about what Obama said:

You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, a lot of them — like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they’ve gone through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, and they cling to guns, or religion, or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Small town Americans cling to guns, or religion or antipathy toward immigrants and/or people not like them because they’re frustrated and bitter.

I think the real problem for Obama and his disciples is not that Americans are too dumb to understand the words that drop from the messiahs mouth but rather that they understand them all too well.

If by “we” he means the MSM, I agree totally.  If he’s referring to the American people, he’s dead wrong.

Im sorry, but if you are a person who could confuse the word “and” with the word “because”....you are dumb.  Not just dumb, REALLLLLLY DUMB.

So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, and they cling to guns, or religion, or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Now what was that YOU said?

Small town Americans cling to guns, or religion or antipathy toward immigrants and/or people not like them because they’re frustrated and bitter.

I think it’s safe to say that anyone who confuses the word “and” with the word “because” is either doing it out of dishonesty, or stupidity.

Well, there went Hannitized’s pledge not to insult anyone.

By the way, I think you need to work on your reading comprehension.  Here’s Obama’s statement:

Rural Americans get bitter, and they cling to guns/religion/hatred of people not like them to explain their frustrations.

Their frustrations being the same bitterness Obama referred to in the beginning of the sentence.

But keep spinning, Hannitized.  You’re making yourself look more like a fool than I ever could.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

It’s the snobby notion of Obama’s that small-town Americans ‘cling to guns and religion’ that has people pissed off, but Barack has the audacity to try to snow those he’s offended by suggesting the offense is over the “bitter” remark.

That wasn’t pointed directly at anyone.  Do you think smart people confuse the words?  Is there really that much similarity between the words, yes or no?

By the way, I think you need to work on your reading comprehension.  Here’s Obama’s statement:

Oh brother Rob.  I can’t believe you are serious.

Do you see the word AND?  The use of it transitions the sentences from one to another.  So we have two statements.

1) People are bitter (about their economic situation and noones ability to change it)

2) And they cling guns, ect. ect. (voting on those issues) as a way to explain their frustrations (about not being able to change their economic status when the voted on them in the past).

Its about votes.  Read and listen to the entire context of that discussion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMkQ6OPi3RU
2)

There is no way you can explain away the context of this topic.  We have video from 2004 of Obama saying the same thing.  We have Jim Webb, in 2006 , saying the same thing.  We have Obama correcting his mangled language immediately after this statement.

All of it points to votes....as does the context of this discussion in question.

I am so not the fool on this Rob, and you know it.

Hannitized on April 19, 2008 at 03:38 pm

I fail to see how Webb saying something nearly as dumb as Obama somehow makes everything better.

Ken McCracken on April 19, 2008 at 03:48 pm

1) People are bitter (about their economic situation and noones ability to change it)

False.  Americans wish govt would get the hell out of their lives, leave them alone, and stop distorting the economy, but they’re clearly not “bitter”.  Obama lied about that.

2) And they cling guns, ect. ect. (voting on those issues) as a way to explain their frustrations (about not being able to change their economic status when the voted on them in the past).

False.  Wrong premise, wrong conclusion.  Since Americans aren’t “bitter” because the govt isn’t “doing” enough for them, their affection for God, their reverence for the Constitutional rights and their distaste for invaders is quite logical.  It is an insult to call it “clinging”.  Most Americans realize that you can’t “vote” your way to prosperity; you have to work for it.

There is no “context” here; both statements are simple declarative statements and are false on the facts.

Your continued bleating about “spin” is simply a pathetic attempt to lie for Obama, who has made it quite clear, in addressing the SF leftie elites, what he thinks of mainstream America.

It establishes a pattern, motive and proof that this line of thinking has been in Dem circles since 2004.  When talking to people who understand the argument, there isn’t as much need for clarification.

It’s called an opinion, Robert.  You can’t lie about what you think.  If that were the case I would say you are lying.

Don’t assume Obama was talking about you.  Clearly you differ from us and him.  Not everybody thinks like you Robert.

Obviously people who think like us outnumber people like you.  The election process is proving that.

Close your eyes, click your heels three times, and wish real hard, little dude!

Obama made a declarative statement about what he thinks mainstream Americans believe about govt, and about how they feel about it.  He was wrong in both cases.  Now, two things could be true here: Either he has become deluded with his own propaganda, or, like most rich lefties(like his leftie pals in SF), he really believes that crap about Americans.  In either case, he’s not fit to hold public office, much less be the President of all Americans.  At best, he is woefully ignorant, and at worst he is completely cynical and manipulative.

Once again, you confirm our point: Obama is as out of touch with what Americans are about as all his rich leftie pals.  It is obvious, after all.  He, and they, are just plain wrong.

Since Americans aren’t “bitter” because the govt isn’t “doing” enough for them,

Umm...check out Robs post about people paying taxes, and some admitting that they are frustrated and bitter about their economic situation.

So, not only are you wrong, but you are twice wrong if you think Obama thinks everyone thinks this way.  He is talking about those it applies to.

their affection for God, their reverence for the Constitutional rights and their distaste for invaders is quite logical.  It is an insult to call it “clinging”.

Yes, it is logical, as Obama has said.  And this is why they cling to these issues, when it comes voting time, because they know that if they vote on them, they can actually make a difference in voting on issues that matter to them.

This is really way over your head Robert.

Most Americans realize that you can’t “vote” your way to prosperity; you have to work for it.

When you say most, are you referring to the numbers that were twice that in voting for Obama, or the small insignificant numbers that voted for McCain?

Shortly after writing an opinion piece, Jim Webb kicked ass in Virginia running on precisely that issue.

Anyone waiting 25 years for the gov’t to deliver jobs has more problems than bitterness, but come on, can’t we just have Obama as our 1st affimative action president, not really qualified but give him the post out of our sense of fairness and past guilt.

halfacarafe on April 20, 2008 at 08:27 am

Well, if I were guilty, or the least bit concerned with “fairness”, I might go along with that. Having had firsthand, personal experience with the results of affirmative action hires, I’ll pass on this one, thank you.

If Obamoid and his cultists are so upset about him being questioned, why don’t they preempt all this unpleasantness and finally release his comprehensive, detailed administration plan? All I have seen from him so far is a 3 page “summary” that looked like something written by a High School sophomore.

No, the leftards will continue to screech&wail and render their hair over the “unfairness” of him having to answer for his political and personal associations and past actions. Oh. My. God!!!

Question: won’t Rob answer why he thinks the word “BECAUSE” is the same as “AND”?

Answer:  Because to do so, would reveal a serious lack of logic.

r, Got to disagree. Obamoid was correct. Democrat voters are bitter, and they cling to religion as the magic bullet that will bring socialism to America, and they parade about in brand new Cabelas clothing clinging to guns they are terrified of.

Best part? I was among a large and varied group of people yesterday. At least 1/2 of who are Democrats. And they were all upset about their Party’s candidates and situation. Now, who is that bad news for? That is the question.

It is not racism to tell The Truth about Affirmative Action.  When an unqualified person is hired over a qualified person based on his or her skin color, that is racism, but I don’t think it is in the way you implied, Hannitized.
AA is racism.  Period.  Anyone who subscribes to that notion or “goes along” with it is racist if done on the basis of race or heterophobic if done on the basis of gender.  How about handedness?  height?  mental ability?  handicap?  drug use?
and on and on and on.  Hire on ability, education and initiative!  Anything else is a fraud.

Affirmative Action is SO racist! IF you were going to have open heart surgery would you want a doctor who was well qualified for his merits? OR would you rather have a doctor chosen for his color or gender? After hearing Rev. Wright and his GD America speech it should be a No Brainer that Obama is the WRONG Man for the job. IF the Dems actually select Obama as their candidate it will be a total shame on their party! Obama should resign and save the Democrats from any further embarrassment.
