Larry Craig To Resign

Maybe as soon as today.

WASHINGTON (CNN)—Several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho have told CNN that embattled Republican Sen. Larry Craig is likely to resign soon, possibly as early as Friday.

A GOP source with knowledge of the situation told CNN’s Dana Bash that the Republican National Committee was poised to take the extraordinary step of calling on Craig to resign.

However, that move was put on hold, the source said, because top party leaders have received indications that Craig himself is preparing to step down.

Sources have confirmed that high-level meetings on the matter were being conducted in Idaho on Thursday.

I think this is for the best.  Not because I think Craig was actually guilty of doing anything in that bathroom a reasonable person would call a crime, or because he’s gay but has a voting record against things like gay marriage, but rather because he cheated on his wife.  And soliciting sex, gay or straight, in a bathroom is conduct unbecoming a US Senator.

And, for the record, I think Senator Vitter in Louisiana who cheated on his wife with a hooker should resign as well.  I know cynics believe most politicians fool around on their wives, and that may or may not be true, but even if it is there is no justification for tolerating it in a national leader when absolute confirmation of it is put in front of our faces.

Meme watch: All those who were busy calling Republicans a bunch of closeted gay hypocrites will now pillory Republicans for being a bunch of homophobes for getting Craig to resign.

He didn’t resign today because Senator Warner announced his retirement.  It would have been even more unseamly to step all over a true gentleman’s retirement announcement.  So Craig will just have to do it tomorrow.

See this for what it is. You have lost one of your own.

His record includes a series of votes against gay rights and his support of a 2006 amendment to the Idaho Constitution that bars gay marriage and civil unions.

So the Idaho Statesman came up with a gay blogger saying that, “according to anonymous sources”, Craig has sex with men. Then, according to another anonymous source, he surried around Union Station for a few moments of unfulfilled dilly dallying.

See this for what it is.

“Ed Johnson is an openly gay man, former local elected official and has been an acquaintance and neighbor of Craig’s off and on for 15 years. He is president of the Gangplank Slipholders Association, a neighbor to the smaller Capital Yacht Club, where Craig lives. “If I thought there was truth to the rumor, I’d be first in line to out him,” said Johnson, who agrees hypocritical public officials should be exposed."”

See this for what it is. You have lost one of your own.

From the collectivist point of view; from the individual point of view, a man who may have compromised his principles has been driven out of office by a misdemeanor conviction that is being played into an accusation of being gay.  In other words, gay smear.  If he is gay, you have lost one of your own.  It’s the lefties who claim to support gay people.
