Kumar Goes To The White House

No, it’s not a joke.

WASHINGTON–Actor Kal Penn, who stumped around the country for the Obama presidential campaign, is going to leave Hollywood to work in the Obama White House, EW.Com is reporting. The White House confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that Penn is joining the Obama administration. …
Penn told EW: “I’m going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They’re basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It’s similar to what I was doing on the campaign.”

Well, he’s got acting experience. Maybe he can help Obama deliver his lines.

His character on “House” blew his brains out on last night’s episode.

Even when Obama delivers his lines, they are bullshit.

    WOOF:

Even dead characters can be resurrected.

Ain’t that the truth? Sometimes they should have been left dead, like with Bobby Ewing.

Actually Kutner’s apparent suicide came across to me as a bit of a hack: Gregory House would never have missed the signs that something was wrong. Either it’s not a suicide (in which case we get House behaving like Holmes, funny that) or they screwed up their bible here.

Actually its the only prime time show I watch. And the first in over 10 years. I actually preferred it more before they added so much melodrama to it, and they tend to fictionalize the medical science for the “wow effect”, but it has good production values including good writing (a rarity for Hollywood). And decent medical mysteries that usually tell an interesting human story. This last week with Meatloaf (named “Eddie” in the show if you can believe it) involved a great little Greek tragedy, you would have appreciated that part.

Of course you are allowed to yawn if you like. No hurt feelings on that account. LOL.

    dougee:

I wonder which one of Obama’s 59 states he said this in!

Shame on you dougee, you should know we only have 57 states.

What are they teaching you kids these days?

  • carrick

To answer your question, it was called “new math”.

Fortunately I had my dad to teach me “real math” so it wasn’t a waste.

    …and 57 + 2 need not equal 59, it could equal 61. (Or 061 if you prefer).

And that’s a real math fact.

  • carrick

    LOL.

    Touché.

But are you sure he thought Alaska and Hawaii were states yet?

  • http://dougeefargo.blogspot.com/ dougee

Funny thing though, he can still make coherent sentences without it

Watch this Obama clip and then try to say that again with a straight face Lenny.

If Obama could give a speech 1/10th this good without a teleprompter he might have potential:

    “Hyphenated Americanism” Speech – Excerpts
Former President Theodore Roosevelt, October 12, 1915, in an address to the Knights of Columbus, Carnegie Hall, NYC.

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. This is just as true of the man who puts “native” before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.

The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

For an American citizen to vote as a German-American, an Irish-American, or an English-American, is to be a traitor to American institutions; and those hyphenated Americans who terrorize American politicians by threats of the foreign vote are engaged in treason to the American Republic.

Damn. I’m bummed. House is one of the only shows we bother to watch….great fun, great characters.

Too bad they had to bump this guy off, and the double whammy is the fact that he’s going to work for the Obama crowd.

Gotta say, though, House is probably the best drama on TV now, at least sine Battlestar Galactica is over.

  • Lenny

Keep the Obama hate coming. I love it when ignorant uneducated people bash OUR PRESIDENT. One wingnut claims he can’t speak without a teleprompter and all of you dumbasses jump on it. Newsflash, all presidents use a prompter. Funny thing though, he can still make coherent sentences without it, can’t say the same for Dumma ya.

I attended one of Kal Penn’s events at a nearby college when he was campaigning for Obama. While I can’t say that I support Obama, I do have to admit that Penn’s a very intelligent, well-spoken individual. He’s one of the few Obama appointees that I approve of.

Secondly, BSG is without a doubt one of the best sci-fi shows ever created. Though to be fair, it isn’t that hard when you compare it to its competition in that genre (I’m looking at you Stargate, and all of the awful spinoffs that followed). I’d also recommend checking out the short-lived, but acclaimed Firefly, and the movie based on it (Serenity).

Lastly, I say blech to House. The medical cases are interesting, if a bit far-fetched, but the melodrama is too nauseating to watch. Atleast its better than Grey’s Anatomy though.

    I don’t like ‘House’

It’s about a brilliant but cranky misanthrope. Spark is sadly, only two out of three.
(Hint: “Brilliant” isn’t one of them!)

There is rumor of a show in development for Sparkie…instead of “House”, the working title is “Vacant Lot”.

  • http://dougeefargo.blogspot.com/ dougee

Shame on you dougee, you should know we only have 57 states.

What are they teaching you kids these days?

Carrick, Obama said he had been to 57 states with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. I’ve only had 4 semesters of calculus in college but last time I checked 57+2=59.

What type of math did you learn in school Carrick?

I think that is awesome! Kal Penn is full of youthful energy and will be a great public liaison. He was chilled out, approachable, and smart early on during the campaign, so I’m excited to see him get more into the political scene.

  • Mickey

Penn won’t notice the difference between working in the make believe world of television and Obama’s administration.
He went from playing a shlep on House to playing a shlep in the White House.

It will be like riding a bike.

“I’m going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison.

He gave up a real career for this???

    Dope.

  • crshedd

Maybe he can help Obama deliver his lines

the white house ought to hire bush’s guy. nobody can deliver a line like gw!
    don’t you misunderestimate bush!

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Funny thing though, he can still make coherent sentences without it,

One does not have to “hate Obama” to point out the inaccuracies of that statement. He is tethered to the teleprompter. Without it, he tends to babble.

His character on “House” blew his brains out on last night’s episode.

A good prerequisite to work in the Obama White House!

Let me guess, our new Surgeon General.

    WOOF:

When Kumar went to work for
Obama they had to kill him.
    It was personal.

    Uh yeah.

Do you actually believe that? If so, get help.

Notice that Kal didn’t announce his move until after the episode. I think that is mostly for the sake of proprieties.

Actually Kal been a strong Obama supporter all along. Cool move for him, hope he can make a positive difference.

Pilgrim this is like my favorite show on television too. Wish they had done that episode differently though. The other story line was much more compelling to me….

Didn’t like the way they killed Kutner off on the show…but this will be an interesting four years. I think he’ll make a decent liaison.

    Pilgrim:

Gotta say, though, House is probably the best drama on TV now, at least sine Battlestar Galactica is over.

Which makes House inferior to BSPD (Battlestar Paint Drying) while it was one, which makes House worse than watching paint dry. Er… yeah, I can agree with that.

Lenny, ignorant? Want to match brainpans? Feel free. You’ll regret it though on this blog.

I didn’t watch the H&K movies for the simple reason that Blade III was funnier by accident than any purposeful comedy film of the last ten years and I left the sophomoric nonsense behind twenty-five years ago. He’s going to work for this administration? Hope he’s looking to finish his career there because anyone associated with this ninety-seven car pile-up on the egomaniac express is headed for the last round-up of professional endeavor.

Ask yourself, how many Carter administration people actually were anxious to put that on their resumes after he got screwed at the polls with a Peterbuilt by the voters? Not too many.

I don’t like ‘House’. My sister submits me to that whenever she is around. Yawn.

  • WOOFX

Carrick, I’m not taking Kumar’s death (was he #6 ?), too seriously.
Even dead characters can be resurrected.
There are other ways to write someone out of a series.
