Kid With Cancer Gets Wish To Be An Army Soldier

Would that we had more like him.

FORT HOOD – Five-year-old Gaven Cox was given one wish to do anything he wanted.

Instead of asking to go to Sea World or to meet Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Gaven modestly asked for some McDonald’s food. The child’s parents laughed and told him to make another choice.

“He told us he wanted to be an Army soldier,” said Melissa Heminger, Gaven’s mom. “I was a little bit surprised that he asked for McDonald’s, but in reality, he wanted to be a soldier since he was 3.”

Gaven, who is diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, was granted one wish by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.

Too bad there aren’t more on this site who want to be soldiers.

Hawk on March 21, 2008 at 01:41 pm

hmmm, That is what a coward would think. Anyone who puts themselves in harms way to protect their country & save the lives of others is honorable. BUT you probably don’t understand defense or honor.

Hawk, with another chickenshit, er, hawk argument again!

Those who think the party or the country, will be “taught a lesson” by handing the levers of power over to the liberals will learn a lesson, but it will be at the expense of our country and her liberties. And there are no guarantees that the party or the country will come out stronger, more conservative or better positioned to win elections against the incumbent liberals.

Of course you mean brave men like me who have actually done it.

Good for this kid, and mega-dittos to what Anna says.

(bummer he didn’t get to fire the M16)

Hawk, I tried to join.  They didn’t want a history of asthma, so I’m content to be part of the militia.  Does shoveling the driveway after 8” of snow count as P/T?

Thanks, Hawk! I appreciate your service. I apologize.

Hawk,

Do you have the DD-214 to back that opinion of yours up?

Didn’t think so.

Yes.  I also have my commission letter, my promotion letters, my award paperwork, the paperwork releasing me from the National Guard, which I served in for 5 years after I was on active duty for six years and a VA card I use to get medical treatment for the injuries I acquired while in the military.

I’ll not question Hawk’s service, but will instead look past his childish and petty comments on this site and thank him for it.

Well done, Hawk.  Thank you for your service.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Thanks for your service Hawk. We appreciate it. Now stop trying to pretend that because you served in the past that we should value your opinion more than the majority of soldiers serving today. Because that’s what the chickenhawk argument boils down to.

Kenny on March 21, 2008 at 05:41 pm

Kenny.  Hawk is not saying that we should value his opinion more, but having served and under the conditions he has outlined, he is in a much more informed position to comment on certain things regarding our military.  He said too bad there are not more on this site that want to be soldiers.  That is a reasonable statement.  Just like:  “too bad there are not more people in the US who want to give blood.”
Take a guess what percentage try to give blood before you check the link above.

Still finding it disturbing that a 5 year old wants to kill men, women, and children.  Since he can’t go to Iraq to fulfill his dream, maybe he can throw a puppy off a cliff, he should be able to do that at his age, and then he could feel like a true marine!

hmmm on March 21, 2008 at 05:55 pm

hmmm,

Why not take that up with Hawk, since he’s here to answer?

hmmm, I highly doubt the 5 year old wants to kill people.  Would it be possible that he has been taught by his parents to see the true honor in serving his country.  Or maybe because every little boy wants to be a soldier, policeman, or firefighter when they are little.  Did you want to be a ballerina or model when you were young hmmm?

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.
