Kid Apparently Hangs Himself After Watching Saddam On Television
It was horrible news.
A week-and-a-half ago, this Houston, Texas, boy was found hanged in his bedroom.
His parents say, he had been watching the news the night before.
In the news video of Saddam Hussein, being led to his hanging, a noose placed around his neck.
The boy was apparantly mimicking Hussein’s execution… and didn’t realize the consequences.
A handful of other incidents like this have been reported around the world.
Bismarck psychiatrist Doctor Elsa Remer says kids figure out the difference between fantasy and reality at different rates.
(Dr. Elsa Remer/Psychiatrist): “If there’s a very disturbing or frightening account that’s happening, and your child hears about it, ask them. Don’t assume that they know about it. Ask them what did you hear? And allow them to ask questions, and then discuss it with them.”

As tragic as a kid killing himself is, I don’t buy into this “they’re just mimicking what they see on TV/video games” stuff. If you’re kid is old enough to manage hanging himself/herself but still not capable of discerning reality from what he/she sees on television then there are larger problems at play than their entertainment intake. Like mental and/or parenting problems.
