Kerrey To Retire

Bob Kerrey, former Navy Seal, winner of the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, former Governor, former Senator, and currently president of the New School in New York, announced his retirement yesterday.
Kerrey, who is probably the only Democrat who could give JFK’s Inaugural Address without being booed by fellow Democrats, is also one of the few liberal Democrats I have ever known who could rightly be called a truly honorable man.
When I first met him, he was just considering a career in politics, dispensing sandwiches and football bets at a place called Cliff’s in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The NYT story on his announcement is here. There is no mention of what he plans to do with the rest of his life.

Kerry is also pictured in a different part of the museum but not on the ‘atrocities’ wall…

The Hall of Useless Idiots perhaps?

    Bat One,

I perceived no disrespect and I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about MOH recipients and their deeds.

I see so many journalists make the same poor choice of words (“winning” a medal), so I always inform them of the proper words to use. Most of them meant no disrespect and appreciate being set straight (even at the GF Herald.) Most are merely ignorant (and I mean that in the “uneducated” way and not “stupid” way.)

I’m not a fan of the media and I see so many reporters make basic errors when it comes to reporting military matters. Things like calling Marines “soldiers”, anything with a track being a “tank”, calling sergeants “officers” (because they’re NCOs), etc. In most cases, it is their ignorance of all things military. Since the 70s, very few of them have ever served in uniform (unlike reporters of the 50s and 60s when many had been draftees or served in WWII), so they don’t know about the military. There are some, however, who are very proud of the fact they are ignorant of all things military (they usually are anti-military.) They refuse to learn about the military. Unfortunately, these reporters are often very prominent in their respective networks/newspapers/magazines. I think journalism programs at colleges impress a lot of that anti-militarism into their students, as well.

I get much pleasure, and give some as well, by thanking every soldier, (and Marine) that I see in uniform, whether dress or fatigues, for their service. It’s nice to get a sort of embarrassed smile, and a “thank you sir” in return.

So, Thank you for your service, Veteran and Bat One.

I wasn’t able to serve, but am willing and able to express a deep and heartfelt thanks to anyone who wore the uniform of the greatest country in the history of this planet.

    Veteran and BatOne;

    Thank you for your service.

I can’t comment on his character, but I do have an interesting story about him:

I visited Saigon recently (now called Ho Chi Minh City) and went to their war museum (they call it the “American War”). The old saying about how ‘the winners get to write history’ is true–the museum was highly anti-American.

Included on the wall of ‘war crimes’ (as determined by the winning North Vietnamese) was an operation in which Bob Kerrey was involved. There were even photos of him, both as a young soldier and as a senator…

We’re both right, Whistler–the haughty French-wannabee Kerry is also pictured in a different part of the museum but not on the ‘atrocities’ wall…

    -Cheers

There is no mention of what he plans to do with the rest of his life.

    I recommend living it.

Actually, I do have the right Kerrey. I recognized his photos at the museum and it’s the same as above.

Here is the article from Pravda, I mean the New York Times, about the incident mentioned at the museum.

To be fair, Kerrey seems to think they may have been done something wrong…

    One minor crtique:

A servicemember does not “win” a medal. He/she “is awarded”, “received”, or perhaps even “earned”, but war/combat is not a game and a medal is not a trophy.

I stand corrected. I heard that John Kerry had his winter soldier picture posted up there as well.

    Veteran,

You are correct. Thank you! I intended no disrespect, having served in Vietnam myself. But even now, I find myself in awe of the accomplishments for which the Medal has been awarded, and the uniformly unassuming nature of the recipients.

Veteran: Welcome to Say Anything. Hope you’ll stick around and contribute. There are many of us here who honor the sacrifice made by MoH recipients.

I think you meant John Kerry the twit from Massachusetts.

Bob Kerry is a different story for the most part.

A critique of the critique…critique is spelled “critique”, not “crtique”…

(fingers too fast…brain too slow…to edit on the fly)

More like the wall of infamous traitors.
