Kent Conrad’s Humble Little Beach Cottage

Kent Conrad is quoted in the Fargo Forum whitewashing article about the Countrywide Mortgage scandal he’s found himself embroiled in that his $1.4 million dollar vacation home on the beach in Delaware is a “kind of a traditional beach cottage.”

He’s also said that he couldn’t ever disclose the existence of that cottage to Americans, especially his constituents here in North Dakota, because of “security” concerns.  Well, in a few short minutes with Google and a couple of publicly-available records from government websites I was able to pull up a satellite image of Conrad’s home with no problems at all.

Not such a humble little “cottage” is it?  It’s a big, bad, beach-side $1.4 million dollar dream home.  In fact, I would be willing to bet that once Conrad is through with being a Senator from North Dakota he’ll divest himself of the dumpy little sham apartment in Bismarck he claims is his home for state citizenship requirements and move in to this place which is more fitting to the sort of political player who can call up CEO’s of major mortgage companies and request favors.

And the idea that Conrad couldn’t disclose this home because of security concerns despite its existence being readily accessible to anyone with basic internet search skills is laughable.

Comments

That’s beyond a strange statement that he couldn’t list his beach home.

He’s a terrible liar.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

So, who is Kent hiding from, again? His constituents? Or the FBI? I’m a bit fuzzy on that point.

2hotel9: Conrad must be hiding from me!  Bethany Beach is about 80 minutes south of my less-than-luxurious water-front home.

Maybe I’ll run down there, drop in for tea and pass along Rob’s salutations.  smile

For those of you who haven’t yet visited the Diamond State, our best beach communities, all in Sussex County [we have 3 counties when the tide is out...], are Lewes, Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany, with Bethany being the most sought-after - and thereby the most expensive - ocean-front community.

For decades, Delaware beaches have been the home-away-from-home for many of Washington’s movers and shakers, being only a two-hour drive from the Capitol.

Imagine that!  A little bit of ND right in my back-yard, so to speak.  smile

Just as nauseating as the Forum article was the Rich Karlgaard, Forbes west coast editor, letter to the editor in the Bismarck Tribune today.  Karlgaard claims the mantel of a “conservative republican” - a highly dubious claim and defends Conrad and his mortgage.  Just another sign of Conrad’s wealthy friends, Rich and the Senator are close buddies and have been for years.

So has the Bismarck paper covered the fact that Kent waived the budget rules on a bill that benefits Countrywide (probably more than any other entity)?

I’ve been watching the GF and Fargo papers and so far it’s been a complete blackout on that news.

After all the powers that be in the Forum Headquarters don’t want us to know.

You don’t need to thank me.

All of Conrad’s statements before this one had some plausibility, a maybe it’s possible, a “yeah, that’s a stretch, but still...” glimmer of distant connection to reality. There’s too much calling of people “liars” these days, so even though all of Conrad’s claims have stunk, well, it’s possible.

But the idea that he couldn’t list his house because of security concerns? That’s a lie. For one thing, his townhouse on Capital Hill is well known.

As Rob has demonstrated before, you can go to the county property records for the Bethany Beach beach mansion and find all sorts of identifying information:

Including the D.C. home.

Some reporter with the WSJ or Portfolio or the Connecticut papers should call the Senate ethics/disclosure people and doublecheck that claim.

This piece of crap received preferential financial benefits from a mortgage company that does business across multiple state lines. A company that has benefited directly from Kent’s actions in Congress. Why, again, is he not sitting in a jail cell?

Had any of us committed these multiple felonies we would be denied bond, and our immediate family members would be arrested, also.

hhhmm.... the ownership name on that property is very interesting, in a televised interview -linked to over at Powerline - he claims the beach house is in his wife’s name, it was her idea to buy it etc. (kind of like saying hey I don’t really want this big fancy house its all my wife’s idea).  I’ll give it to the guy, he’s a lousy liar.

Remember when John Kerry was challenged about owning an SUV? Oh, that’s not mine, it’s the family’s!
These guys read from the same lame playbook!

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.
