Kent Conrad’s Countrywide Mortgage Deceptions Making National News

From the Wall Street Journal:

Kent Conrad, the North Dakota Democrat whose office issued a Friday statement saying that “I never met Angelo Mozilo.” What he did not say then but admitted under later questioning by a Journal reporter is that, although he may not have had a face-to-face meeting with the Countrywide CEO, Mr. Conrad had called Mr. Mozilo and asked for a loan. The result was a discounted loan on his million-dollar beach house and a separate commercial loan of a type that residential lender Countrywide did not even offer to other customers, regardless of the rate.

So after calling the CEO of a company with various matters before the Senate, asking for a loan and then receiving at least two sweetheart deals, Mr. Conrad now says: “I did not think for one moment – and no one ever suggested to me – that I was getting preferential treatment.” Lawyers will immediately wonder if this isn’t a version of the “ostrich defense,” which judges describe during jury instruction as willful blindness or deliberate ignorance. For what other reason, besides preferential treatment, would one call the CEO of the mortgage company? Does Mr. Conrad call August Busch IV when he wants to buy a six-pack?

Almost as breathtaking is Senator Conrad’s attempt to use a charitable contribution for the estimated amount of any mortgage savings – $10,500 – to make the issue go away. So while the Senator says he did nothing wrong, now that his nonmistake has been discovered he’ll nonetheless give away the nonspecial treatment cash. There is ample evidence here to warrant an investigation, including subpoenas for relevant documents.

Ouch.

And now this from CNN:

Is it time for Conrad to step down?  If Conrad is capable of requesting and getting extra-special treatment from a mortgage company, what other malfeasance is he capable of?

Rob I believe this could turn out worse than Senator Conrad is leading on. I hope this picks up speed. This is the stuff that the democratss ran on when they were taking back the senate and house in 2006 and now they are doing the same things they accused the GOP of. Drain the swamp and send these guys home.

Funny how when it is a democrats they don’t get as much scrutiny.

Kent Conrad is either too corrupt to continue representing the people of North Dakota… or too stupid.  There really are no other choices.

Step down?!  No chance of that happening.

This thing’s gonna die soon, and here’s why: there is probably a GOP senator or two who also received sweetheart deals from Countrywide.  They won’t press for an investigation when they know their actions will also be scrutinized.  Mozilo was buying off politicans left and right (pun intended).

This is the guy responsible for writing the country’s budget!
I realize he’s been on the dole almost his whole life, but c’mon!

WhaTha?—Doesn’t matter if Rep or Dem. if they have done wrong then they gotta go. Conrad lied about who the owner was also. Maybe the loan can be made out to be legit but the lie will/should get him.

WhaTha?

You may very well be correct that Mozila tried to influence members of both parties, but so far there is no evidence to support your presumption.  Furthermore, it appears Conrad, who lied about the ownership of the property, sought out Mozila, not the other way around.

If you’ve got anything to substantiate your feeling, by all means share it with the rest of us.

This means little Lord Pomeroy and Byron Dorgan are friends of “a Friend of Angelo!”

In his editorial today, Tom Dennis chalked it up to Conrad’s naiveté; he just didn’t know any better.  Are you kidding me?  He must think his readership is naive too to believe such nonsense.

If Tom Dennis had a shred of integrity himself, he would have called for Kent Conrad to step aside, and for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to strip Conrad and Dodd of their respective Committee chairmanships pending a full Justice Department investigation of Mozila’s activities.

Of course, neither Harry Reid nor Tom Dennis has that “shred of integrity” anyway.  But then, thoughtful individuals who are possessed of personal integrity don’t take either Reid or Dennis very seriously.
