Kent Conrad Lies About Never Having Met Angelo Mozilo

From Senator Kent Conrad’s press release about the story tying him to a $1.07 million “VIP” loan given to him by Countrywide Mortgage CEO Angelo Mozilo:

“I never met Angelo Mozilo. And in my role as a United States Senator, I have never done anything for Countrywide.

Kent Conrad as quoted by the Associated Press:

Conrad, the Budget Committee chairman, said it was Johnson who referred him to Mozilo in 2002 when the North Dakotan was seeking a loan to buy a vacation home in Bethany Beach, Del.

``I called (Mozilo). I said, ‘I’m buying this property. Would you be interested in the mortgage?’, and he said, ‘Yeah. Call these people and we’ll take a look,’‘’ Conrad said.

``I deal with the heads of companies every day, and I didn’t find it at all unusual. I did not think for one moment - and no one ever suggested to me - that I was getting preferential treatment,’’ Conrad said.

I suppose Conrad could say he was just parsing this - he called Mozilo, but never met him - but really, that level of deception is what most reasonable people call a lie.

What’s the chance that Kent was going to try lying his way out of it.

He should leave his defense up to the professionals at the Forum.

Another slick politician talking: ““I never met Angelo Mozilo. And in my role as a United States Senator, I have never done anything for Countrywide.”
Never met him but he surely talked to him:``I called (Mozilo). I said, ‘I’m buying this property. Would you be interested in the mortgage?’, and he said, ‘Yeah. Call these people and we’ll take a look,’’’

Semantics.

No, but it’s the MSM that you all hate and distrust unless it’s about a dem.  I get it now.

Calautti joined Major League Baseball in 2004, so these loans were also being negotiated—it looks like—when she was Dorgan’s chief of staff.

No, Whistler, did it sound like I was crying. Certainly didn’t want it to sound like that.  Just pointing out how Rob et al whine about the MSM and then jump with glee when the MSM writes something they can go after a dem without the least bit of hesitation.  I’m just sayin…...

Pom. was there a break between her COS job and major league baseball, or our you just reaching like everyone else here.

I find it funny that it took Conde Nast Portfolio to do it while the Washington post was napping.

Mainstream Media, Humph.

Of course if it was by the mainstream media it wouldn’t matter, you’re just trying to divert attention to the fact that your boy got caught and has a black eye.

Didn’t Gaylord claim he would only serve one term as senator?

During the campaign, Conrad pledged that he would not run for re-election if the Federal budget deficit had not fallen by the end of his term. By 1992 it became obvious that this would not be the case, and although polls showed that the electors would have welcomed him going back on his pledge, Conrad considered his promise binding and did not run for re-election. Dorgan won the Democratic primary election.

Conrad got an unusual opportunity to remain in the Senate when the other North Dakota senator, long-serving Dem-NPLer Quentin Burdick, died on September 8, 1992. Burdick’s widow, Jocelyn Birch Burdick, was appointed to that seat temporarily, but a special election was needed to fill the rest of the term. As this was not running for re-election, Conrad ran for and secured the Democratic-NPL nomination.

The fix was in and the Nd. sheeple continued to snooze.

Like I predicted the Media is trying to spin this as no big deal. It will be swept under the rug just like Dorganoff miss steps were…

IOW, he didn’t bother to read the documents he signed, kinda like he doesn’t read the legislation he votes on!

From the Wall Street Journal article: ’ “I did absolutely nothing wrong here,” Sen. Conrad said. Before getting the recommendation from Mr. Johnson, Sen. Conrad said, he had never heard of either Countrywide nor Mr. Mozilo.’

How is it that I, a lowly dayworker in North Dakota, could have known about Countrywide mortgage company (not as a customer of either, mind you) for many years, and yet the then-ranking member (now chair) of the U.S. SENATE BUDGET COMMITTEE didn’t know who they were?!  Get real, Kent.

But, I’m certain that the same MSM (in-state and otherwise) who are running a few stories about this on a weekend will make sure it never sees the light of day when people are actually paying attention.

SPEAKER: SEN. HARRY REID, D-NEV.,
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER….

As my colleagues all know, when it comes to the budget, Senator Kent Conrad is in a league of his own. He is the greatest budget expert
I have ever known, bar none.

But he’s never heard of Countrywide.

So why make the call? There are plenty of other lenders out there, probably some you’ve dealt with already. Why not call them instead?

We need to replace all democratic members of Congress.  They did not listen to us—- get them out as soon as possible.

I’ll vote for McCain in 2008.

Well, I know that when I go looking for a mortgage the first thing that occurs to me is calling the freaking CEO of the mortgage company...

hey, pretty interesting… just how much money and property does Kent Conrad have, after, lo, all these years working as a public servant?
  And Byron Dorgan, too… ?
If it’s not much, hey, more power to them.

but, when you call the CEO to ask about buying a million-buck vacation home on the beach…...sounds sort of, well, PHATTTTTT.

And the ND media will give him a free pass…
