Kent Conrad Is An Out-Of-State Political Contributor

Written By:

Earlier today while I was tallying up the fundraising totals for Democrat House candidate Pam Gulleson I noticed that Senator Kent Conrad and his lobbyist wife Lucy Calautti were listed as having contributed a total of $5,000.

But their names weren’t listed among the North Dakota contributors, because their address is in Washington DC (I’m surprised they didn’t use the address for their $3 million Delaware beach house).

This was fitting, I think. Senator Conrad hasn’t actually lived in North Dakota for a long, long time. He maintains an apartment here, of course, in the four-plex he financed at one time through a VIP loan from Angelo Mozilo at Countrywide Financial but I’d be willing to lay even money that neither he nor his wife have ever actually seen the inside of it.

Ironically enough, one of Senator Conrad’s neighbors in that four-plex was none other than Senator Byron Dorgan, though I’m sure Dorgan is no longer maintaining the fiction of that apartment. Now that Conrad is retiring, I’m sure he’ll be moving out of that apartment soon too. But don’t expect to see any moving vans any time soon.

He never really lived there in the first place, and now that he has no legal obligation to even pretend like he lives in North Dakota, I’m sure the only time he’ll visit the state is to go through the motions of certain honorary functions for his party.
