Senator Kent Conrad is soon to become, thankfully, a footnote in North Dakota history. To that end, he’s donating his papers to George Washington University in Washington DC, which is fitting given that he stopped all but the pretense of living in North Dakota some time ago.

He is providing a copy of his papers to the Heritage Center in Bismarck, too, which is nice of him I guess.

What I wonder is whether or not, among those papers, Conrad will be including the VIP mortgage applications for the apartment building in Bismarck he claimed was his official residence for legal reasons and for the $3.1 million Delaware beach house where actually lived? Conrad got extra-special discounts on the mortgages for both properties, saving him tens of thousands of dollars, contemporaneously to his helping guide through Congress a big, fat bailout for Countrywide Financial which originated the loans.

Conrad admits to talking with Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo about the loans, but claims he didn’t think he was getting any special treatment. Because everyone gets discounts on their loans after talking to the CEO of bank, right?

That, I think, is the perfect encapsulation of Conrad’s legacy. A mealy-mouthed deficit hypocrite who could be bought of for a few thousand dollars in mortgage discounts.

Good riddance.
