Kent Conrad At A Loss To Explain Heitkamp’s Acceptance Of Anti-Nuke Money

Senator Kent Conrad was interviewed by Valley News Live’s Chris Berg this evening, and they had an interesting discussion over what Republicans in the state have described to me as their best issue against Heidi Heitkamp. Namely, money from the far-left anti-nuke group Council for a Livable World.

Conrad offered a not very convincing explanation for why Heitkamp would accept money from this group that has a national security agenda so clearly at odds with North Dakota’s interests. Conrad, who clearly isn’t used to being challenged in these sort of local interviews, just pointed out over and over that he and former Senator Dorgan had both also accepted contributions from the group.

Which doesn’t really explain anything.

One aspect of the contributions Berg missed in his questioning is that Heitkamp didn’t simply accept money from this group. She paid this group for the right to send out solicitations to their membership. They didn’t come after her. She went after them.

That’s significant, and Conrad’s lame explanations really don’t diminish that point.
