Katie Couric Nails It On The Ports Deal

Newsbusters:

Interviewing Tim Russert, Couric quickly turned the talk to the fact that “only 5% of the cargo coming into this country is checked. It might be one of the biggest national security threats we face as a nation in terms of terrorist attacks.”
Katie then unloaded her shot in the guise of a question about Congress:
“Do they look feckless and misdirected by obsessing so much on this [UAE] issue and not perhaps looking at the big picture?”

Exactly.
While members of Congress give themselves a collective pat-on-the-back for denying our trusted middle-eastern ally a contract to manage one of our ports the fact remains that security at our ports, which has never had anything to do with the ports deal making headlines of late, is still woefully inadequate and has been so for years.
Our federal leaders, both in Congress and in the White House, have failed to take the necessary steps to make our ports more secure. Now some of those leaders want us to believe that denying Dubai Ports World the contract to manage some of our ports, as they already manage hundreds of ports across the country, is making us safer.
These people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

I hate when the Anti-Christ Media gets it right.

But, now and then even a blind sow finds an acorn.

Here’s a brief, updated commentary on the DPW fiasco from the WSJ Political Diary (subscription required).

"If Boeing ends up losing the next Dubai bid, one sight you can expect not to see on Capitol Hill is a hearing that includes testimony from the laid-off Boeing workers who would have kept their jobs if Boeing had won the contract."

    Mike,

FWIW, I heard a similar interview on the Tony Snow show with the guy who is purportedly in charge of the federal government’s port security.  He stated that while only 5% of the containers were opened and inspected, every container was scanned for radiological material.

"This is one of the many ways the Bush regime is weak on security, weak on al Qaeda, and strong on lining the pockets of its friends."

    Don,

Wasn’t it those glib commentators on your side of the aisle who were disparaging President Bush for not knowing about the DPW deal?  But now you accuse him of deliberately "lining the pockets" of his friends?  (Which friends are those?)

So which is it?  What didn’t he know, and when didn’t he know it?  Apparently you are accusing him of knowing about the deal before he didn’t know about the deal.  And that sounds awfully similar to the idiot pronouncements of some other pompous liberal windbag.  You know, the one with the french accent, the re-issued hero buttons, and the magic hat in his briefcase.

Don Meyers is a pompus Liberal Winbag! …Well said, Bat one!

  • Zsa Zsa

Bat one… It may seem redundant BUT, sometimes it takes a little redundance to rebound and proceed after hearing all the pompus liberal excess garbage??? I have decided IF I get out of line and say bad cuss word type thingsn when aggrivated I have to pay Rob or Say Anything something! I think pompus liberal windbag is a really nice way of saying it though? I appreciate the description and hope you don’t mind if I use it so I don’t have to make Rob rich!…

Culture of gop corruption – another one bites the dust

Claude A. Allen, who resigned last month as President Bush’s top domestic policy adviser, was arrested this week in Montgomery County for allegedly swindling Target and Hecht’s stores out of more than $5,000 in a refund scheme, police said.

Former Top Bush Aide Accused of Md. Thefts

This makes what – 2 arrested and 1 indicted right out of the white house?

    Nice party

Quite right. This is one of the many ways the Bush regime is weak on security, weak on al Qaeda, and strong on lining the pockets of its friends.

Rob…Uh oh!Are you encouraging me to talk like a driller on an oil rig? I was hoping I could blame some of those bad words on Terets syndrome BUT, I didn’t think anyone would believe me???

"only 5% of the cargo coming into this country is checked."

Well, now.  I’ve heard that before but I’ve never heard it sourced, and Katie Couric’s use of it makes me deeply suspicious.

A few days ago, I was listening to the local NPR affiliate (oppostion research, y’know…) and htey interviewed the durector of the local port authority here in Tampa.  He said 2 things.:

First, he said, that 5% stat is false.  "Every" container entering the U.S. is checked before arrival in some way.

Second, he said that  he has ample federal funding for security and has not requested any more.

In light of these statements, I’m wondering just where the truth is.  As  we saw with the Dubai deal, I think axe-grinders are taking some liberty with facts to push their own agendas.  I’d like to see some actual hard facts, not Known Facts.

Hey, hey we have been using “pompous windbag” for years and year to accurately describe the pompous windbag, Rush – I am a drug addict – Limbaugh…what’s with this hijacking of our bandwagon’s banner?

  • Realitybasedbase

“I don’t think anyone anticipated the breech of the GOP.”

    President Bush

“It was a failure at every level; local, state and federal.”

    Karl Rove

    “What about the buses”

    Sean Hannity

    “Go F*ck yourself”

    Dick Cheney

    “See ya”

    Gale Norton

  • Tom_with_a_Dream

    Mike

No actual facts, sorry.  But I  believe the 5% thing is based on 5% being eye-balled.  The balance are "checked in some way", meaning that they are radiation scanned, xrayed, etc and the paperwork is comapred against (probably) some algorythm to determine statistically which ones to actually open.

What do you think?  (serious question, no snide tone-of-voice)

And just so you know, I am responsible for Freedumb is on the march

  • Puzzlefeet

Since when do you start quoting the MSM, the antiChrist?

  • Bat One

    Zsa-Zsa,

Thank you… but please excuse the redundancy.

How about Dumb asses, Demwitts, and donkey bottoms? AND ROB, asses are in the bible so it is allowed. That is what Bart Simpson says anyway???

The fact that Rush Limbaugh was once addicted to drugs is relevant, exactly how?

Ah yes, that famous liberal tolerance rearing its non-existent head once again.

There is nothing funnier than liberal hypocrisy.

  • Zsa Zsa

    Democrap…!

  • Bat One

    RBB,

Yep!  Couldn’t stand that smarmy "Love Story" though.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

If you get credit for that I’m taking credit for "leftard."

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Returning shoplifed clothes to Target pales in comparison with, say, smuggling classified intelligence documents out of the national archives in your pants.  Or pardoning international criminals for big-money donations.

Do you really want to play this corruption game, or maybe should we all just join together and criticize those who are actually corrupt regardless of partisanship?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Since when do you start quoting the MSM, the antiChrist?

Unlike some, Puzzle, I am capable of discerning when someone who I typically disagree with gets something right.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Realitybobber, if we’re keeping score I’d like to point out that I was the first (that I am aware of) to link Kerry with the term "effete douchebag."

Just, you know, for the record.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Zsa Zsa, go ahead and make me rich… I don’t mind.
