Just What Is ‘Black Liberation Theology’?

As Jeremiah Wright’s church
website
puts it, "the vision statement of Trinity United Church of
Christ is based upon the systematized liberation theology that started in 1969
with the publication of Dr.
James Cone’s
book, Black Power and Black Theology," wherein Cone
stated:

Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the
goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people,
then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology
is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. . . . Black theology
will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the
white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which
is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any
means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity,
we must reject his love.

Just substitute the word ‘white’ for ‘black’, and you have a founding statement
worthy of the Ku Klux Klan.

Here’s an article that really explains Black Liberal Theology. It is evaluated and examined, and ultimately refuted.

But at least you’re all attacking him for being the wrong kind of Christian instead of being a secret Muslim. It’s a slight improvement in hate tactics, right?

Accuse Ken McCracken of something he has never done and then call it a “hate tactic” when he criticizes racist theology.

Looks like the hate tactic is all yours “anon”.

Considering that in 1969 many white racists were just coming to terms with the idea of allowing black people free access to vote or live in the suburbs, this kind of militant philosophy is unsurprising and outdated, considering how far we’ve come since then (even in his speech, Obama said one of Wright’s mistakes was believing American society to be static).

But at least you’re all attacking him for being the wrong kind of Christian instead of being a secret Muslim. It’s a slight improvement in hate tactics, right?

    PS: Michael Moore is fat.

Dr. Cone reads like ‘Nietsche for Dummies’. Union Theological Seminary, Methodist, who ‘da thunk. Did his dissertation on Barth but his heart belongs to Tillich. This guy is schizoid.

Nothing particularly Christian… or Christ-like in that quote from Cone.

Like the rest of us. Mr. and Mrs. Obama are free to choose whatever religious creed they are most comfortable with (Damn! I just love that phrase…”free to choose.”) But as I noted earlier, with choices come the consequences.

I would not support the leadership of someone whose political philosophy embraced an exclusive power elite based on race. Nor can I condone the leadership of someone whose view of God is similarly exclusive, elitist, and race-based.

I agree with BAT ONE, i did check the article for black liberal theology and indeed it give a lot of insights but still its our freedom to choose. We at the seminary was able to get some ideas about this said party. Thanks
