Joe Lieberman Lashes Out At Democrats, Says They’re Not The Party Of Truman And FDR

He’s right, too.

WASHINGTON — The Senate’s only “independent Democrat” is lashing out at the party whose vice presidential nominee he once was, accusing its leaders of betraying the tradition of presidents Roosevelt, Truman, and Kennedy.

At a speech before Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, Senator Lieberman of Connecticut said, “Since retaking Congress in November 2006, the top foreign policy priority of the Democratic Party has not been to expand the size of our military for the war on terror or to strengthen our democracy promotion efforts in the Middle East or to prevail in Afghanistan. It has been to pull our troops out of Iraq, to abandon the democratically elected government there, and to hand a defeat to President Bush.”

One gets the idea that if the Democrats spent a little more time listening to the Joe Liebermans of their party and a little less time listening to groups like MoveOn the approval rating of the Congress they’re dominating wouldn’t be at 11%.

I think Americans are tired of cynical politics, and the Democrats’ opposition to the war is exactly that.  Cynical political posturing.  Most of them aren’t opposed to the war because that’s good foreign policy.  They’re opposed to the war because back when things looked bleak in Iraq that was a politically advantageous position to have.  It was easy to demagogue Iraq as a policy failure.  But now I think Americans are tired of the Democrats throwing rocks at Iraq instead of talking about how we’re going to win there.

Because ultimately, all Americans long to be winners.
