Jerry Pournelle

Last week I followed a link on Instapundit and dropped into Jerry Pournelle’s website/blog.  Apparently he’s been blogging nearly longer than anyone. I wish I would have know before this.

Pournelle is one of my all-time favorite authors even though he did crash a space ship into North Dakota once.  I looked up his Wikipedia entry and found that I pretty much have every one of his books on my bookshelf, most of them read multiple times.  I still return to the old favorites, especially when I’m going through a lot of stress at home and work.

I was greatly saddened to find out that just in the last couple weeks he’s started taking radiation treatments for a growth in his head.  My thoughts and prayers go out to him, hoping that he makes a full recovery.  Apparently he’s having a hard time speaking right now, but he’s still able to write.  He updates his Blog on a daily basis and I’ve added that to my regular read.

Apparently when he got a regular gig at Byte magazine he stopped writing a lot of fiction.  (With the exception of Starswarm an the Burning City books).  Because of that I wasn’t following him that much.  Things at Byte have changed a lot and he’s no longer with them.  Apparently he has had more time to write as the sequel to Inferno, cleverly named Inferno II, is being prepared for publication.  He also seems to be working on another Jannisarries novel.

I eagerly await the release of both of these books and will continue to hope for the best.

I wish I would have know before this.

Had I known you’d never visited Chaos Manor, I would have introduced you!
As the logical (and thus more conservative) half of Niven & Pournelle, he’s been among my favorite authors for a long time.
Have you read his anthologies, too?

Great short stories, but I fear they may be out of print.

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

I believe I’ve got all of the anthologies as well.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Just found my way here accidentally, but a few posts have me intrigued, including this one.

I haven’t read Pournelle’s stuff yet, but if you’re looking for a Pournelle fix and are not familiar with it, he’s made a few apperances on the netcast “This Week in Tech,” a list of which can be found here.

I had an opportunity to eat lunch with him and several other notables once.  He’s quite a talker!

Cool!  My brother says he met him once at a book signing.

I’m with you on this one, Whistler.  Jerry Pournelle is one of the deans of science fiction writing.  I’ve long believed that the Janissaries series would make for a great movie series as well.

Hope he pulls through, I also have all his published works, I am actually reading Mote In God"s Eye right now. Have several papers he has worked on concerning technology and environment, too.

Thanks for the update on Jerry Pournelle. Ihave read some of his work, but didn’t know he had a blog. It makes sense, though. Here’s bright thoughts for his recovery.

What captcha script do you use? I can actually see the letters.

Love Sci-Fi, and particularly how he does it (Pournelle uses history as a source of warnings about the consequences of certain policies, and of examples of effective military organization and tactics.).

Working on a screenplay myself.

I do, however, disagree with his Pournelle Chart though,

“Leftist" ideologies, such as American liberalism, socialism and communism, are placed by Pournelle in the upper right-hand quadrant of high state control and high rationalism.

Conservatism, fascism and Nazism are placed in the lower right hand quadrant of high state control and low rationalism.

even though he does use the lingo of Statist and use a matrix rather than an inaccurate single-dimension political spectrum.

Last night I got to the section in Mote where the moties are explaining about Crazy Eddie. The who always does the wrong thing for the right reason at just the worst possible time. Sound like anyone we can name?

I would disagree that fascism is any different in principle from any other flavor of Marxism.

They all are predicated on state control of the means of production; two different flavors of the same thing.
