That would be General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing.
You mention Patton (another favorite of mine). Pershing was something of a mentor to Patton. Patton served as one of Pershing’s aid during the pursuit of Pancho Villa.
Also, I just found out that Teddy Roosevelt convinced Congress to promote Pershing to Brig. General in 1905.
