It’s A Hit!

WASHINGTON (AP) - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

Yes, telling the Chinese in not so many words to 'back off' had nothing to do with this, I am sure.

I'm gonna miss W.

This is good.  I wasn’t so worried about the hydrazine.  I was more concerned about pieces of our spy technology falling into the wrong hands.  With the satellite shattered into smaller pieces, one would think there would be less chance of these pieces surviving re-entry.

Heh,

There were an awful lot of folks 20 years ago saying this could not be done.  This was not only done, it was done with a regular fielded system.  It also means that virtually any low polar orbiting satellite (which most photo reconnaissance birds are) is vulnerable to interception by sea based SM-3’s.

You can thank “Star Wars” from “Ronnie Raygun”.

Boy, what an idiot that guy was, huh? He pushed us towards the ability to shoot out incoming projectiles from space. What a fool.

...just following the reality bending liberal logic here folks.

Lik, that’s the same liberal logic ( on a grander scale), that says we have to rely on others for our own personal safety.

Like I said in an earlier comment….the Pentagon set this one up nicely.

What? A satellite could fall to earth with hazardous material aboard? Well! We’d better shoot it down, don’t you think?

Hey, China and Russia, watch this! Nothin’ but love for ya, fellas. Really.

Heh.

The Pentagon briefing, complete with videos ofboth the launch and the impact, some 153 miles above the earth, are here.

Cool stuff!
