Israel To Hamas In Gaza: It’s The Rockets, Stupid

Israel is flat out warning Hamas that if they don’t stop the rocket fire the full strength of the Israeli military will come down on them:

JERUSALEM (AP)—Israel’s deputy defense minister warned of disaster in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian rocket fire grew more ominous Friday with an assault on an Israeli city. Gaza’s unbowed Hamas rulers promised to fight on.

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai told Army Radio that because of the militants’ attacks, Israel had “no other choice” but to launch a massive military operation in the Gaza Strip.

“As the rocket fire grows, and the range increases ... they are bringing upon themselves a greater ‘shoah’ because we will use all our strength in every way we deem appropriate, whether in airstrikes or on the ground,” Vilnai said.

Will this stop or even slow the rocket attacks? Probably not. They may even increase. Why? Because then Hamas can cry to the world press and the UN about brutal Israeli aggression. And the media and the leftist UN will lap it up the way they always do instead of telling Hamas, look, just stop shooting rockets, stupid.

And the beat goes on.

I can’t understand why the individuals would continue the rocket attacks and Hamas reasons for allowing this to continue, unless they can’t stop it.  If Israel takes out Hamas will they get support or sympathy?  Are they hoping to bring Hezbollah and Syria into a conflics?

What nation on earth would put up with daily rocket attacks for this long.

This kind of brings up an interesting question. Say the UN were to intervene against Israel. What would we do? I doubt we would work with the UN, but would we intervene on behalf of the Israelis?

Andrew,

If you look at the string of anti-Israeli resolutions and rhetoric propagated by the UN, and the selectively ineffectiveness of the UN’s so-called “Peacekeepers” its not at all difficult to conclude that your question, though interesting, is a good deal more timely and pertinent than you indicate.

Israel is an ally, a trading partner, and the only functioning democracy in the Middle East.  Its citizens, Arab and Jew alike, enjoy more individual liberty and more self-determination than those of any other ME country.

Neither of the Democrats’ candidates has any foreign policy, foreign trade, or national defense experience to speak of, but to listen to the rhetoric its not hard to conclude that if either Clinton or Obama is elected, the US-Israel relationship will change for the worse.
