Is Obama America’s First Co-President?
The media has decided that Obama is more relevant right now that President Bush. And that may be true to some extent. Bush is unpopular for a myriad of good (and some not so good) reasons, and he’s a lame duck with just a few short weeks left in office. Obama is new and much-hyped and has the luxury of being able to put himself in the media a lot without having to actually do anything.
So, of course, Obama’s getting more attention right now.
But does that make him co-President? I don’t think so. Because what has Obama actually done since being elected? Not anything that any other President hasn’t done (hold press conferences, nominate staff, etc.).
President Bush, on the other hand, is on the verge of signing an agreement with Iraq that would put the elected government in charge of the country and set a date for the withdrawal of our troops.
Now I can understand how the media - having so thoroughly invested itself in the idea of defeat in Iraq - may want to avoid President Bush’s victory lap on the war like the plague, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
Bush, for better or worse, is still the President. And until January, Barry O. is just a guy who holds press conferences.
