Is Bobcat Closing Its Operations In Bismarck?

That’s the big rumor everybody keeps emailing me about today. Obviously a lot of jobs, not to mention a lot of taxpayer dollars, are at stake. The state, and the city of Bismarck, has sunk a lot of “economic development” money into Bobcat including a multi-million dollar intermodal depot at the airport in Bismarck that, though it was billed as being infrastructure for several industries, really was built with taxpayer money almost exclusively for Bobcat.
So is Bobcat in Bismarck closing? I have absolutely nothing firm to confirm that they are, but I do hear some other interesting rumors which seem to put the answer at “yes.”
Rumors about an expansion of the Gwinner plant and a consolidation of operations.
Rumors about white-collar types at Bobcat in Bismarck having put their homes on the market.
Rumors about union officials not getting answers to their questions from Bobcat corporate.
But that’s all everything is at this point. Rumor.
I’ll be as sad as anyone to see Bobcat close, but not surprised. North Dakota’s economy hasn’t taken the shellacking the national economy has, but Bobcat sells to an international market. So as a company, they’ve taken a hit.
But for me the real issue here isn’t so much whether or not Bobcat is going to close – businesses come and businesses go – but rather, again, the “economic development” money sunk into Bobcat. All private businesses have an element of risk to them. The taxpayers shouldn’t have to be exposed to that risk.

It is a sad deal, but having lived in ND it is long overdue, bill Wocken and Hoeven are white supremescisits.

Without the economic development money Bobcat would not be there in the first place, but then you would not have anything to cry about.

A friend of mine came up to me with that rumor as well. He said that the mini-excavator part of the Bismarck plant and the smaller skidsteer part are not keeping busy enough. The cylinder shop produces parts that get shipped to Gwinner anyway. If those two things are accurate, it would make sense.

One thing to note down here in Bismarck is that during hurricane and/or typhoon season, depending on which side of which ocean the action is, those little excavators fly out like crazy.

I wonder how the city’s Commerce Center will fare with its flagship client packing up and moving operations elsewhere? Another economic development success story!

Your Great China Outlet Mall started that shit by saying that they were interested in building in one of three or four locations and then waiting until they got the best tax rebates and infrastructure build out offer. Now it is common place for a city to provide the sewer, water and roads to accommodate the new business. No money no jobs, thanks wally-world.

    Rob,

I’m interested in a name or two of the management types who have put their homes up for sale? I’ve got some skin in this game.

Cities were doing that long before Wal-Mart came along.

btw… in this context, commonplace is one word.

    commonplace: usual; typical

common place: [arc.] park, public space, ordinary location

when a korean biz bought em i said they be closing both plants to serve their best customer….china.

listen, they had to fight IR to keep them open!!!! how much do you think a korean biz cares if IR wanted to shut them down?

Actually, Bobcat is originally a ND company.

And if a company can’t exist without subsidy it shouldn’t exist.

    Get a clue.
