Irony: Democrats Demanding Stop To Foreign Political Money Took Foreign Political Money

At least, using their standards and logic they took money.

Democrats have been making a big stinking deal out of organizations like the US Chamber of Commerce and Karl Rove’s Crossroads organization using foreign contributions to manipulate American politics. In the case of the Chamber, it’s suggested that because the organization is affiliated with foreign subsidiaries, that means some of their revenues come from foreign sources. And since money is fungible, that means foreign money is being used by the Chamber in American politics.

This is colossally unfair, and entirely baseless, but that’s the logic the left is using.

So keeping that in mind, it’s more than little ironic that 14 of 15 Democrats who wrote a letter to the FEC recently demanding more protections against foreign money in American politics took a total of $1.2 million in contributions from domestic subsidiaries of foreign companies.

The Democrats who signed the letter are Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Al Franken (D-MN), Kirten Gillibrand (D-NY), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Pat Leahy (D-VT), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jack Reed (D-RI),Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Ron Wyden (D-OR).

A full listing of who took what from whom is here.

Now, remember that according to the Democrats money is fungible. No doubt these subsidiaries of foreign companies get revenues in some manner from their parent companies. Ergo, these Democrats are all guilty of accepting foreign contributions using the same logic they’re using to accuse the US Chamber et. al. of the same.
