Iraqis Kicking Americans Out, Or Americans Handing Iraq Back To The Iraqis?

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is saying that his government is ready for American forces to leave the green zone in Iraq.  The spin from the media on this development is something along the lines of “Americans getting ousted,” but is that really accurate?  Are Americans getting ousted or is one of the goals the Bush administration has had in Iraq since the first day of the war finally coming to fruition?

I think it’s the latter.  President Bush himself promised that as Iraqis stand up America will stand down.  It has always been our goal to develop and then protect an elected and representative civilian government in Iraq until the time when that government felt it could stand on its own.

Clearly, that time is drawing nigh.  And it’s not a situation where Iraqis are kicking Americans out but rather a situation where we are handing over control of the country to the Iraqis themselves as the Bush administration always intended.

If al-Maliki’s government takes over control of Baghdad as a whole it will be a stunning victory not just for the Bush administration and our troops in Iraq but also for the Iraqis themselves.

maybe you should call president bush and tell him this, since he does not seem to know.

The strategy is to help the Iraqi people achieve the objectives and dreams which is a democratic society. That’s the strategy. The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave. We’re not leaving so long as I’m the president. That would be a huge mistake. It would send an unbelievably you know terrible signal to reformers across the region. It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror.

The president has also said:

We are there at the invitation of the Iraqi government. This is a sovereign nation. Twelve million people went to the polls to approve a constitution. It’s their government’s choice. If they were to say, leave, we would leave.

But, now that has happened, and what is the response?

Gibberish from people like you.

Classic.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is saying what will help him win the next election. If we left today, he’d be killed tomorrow and replaced by someone more pro Iran. We will throw some more money his way on the backside so we can stay a little longer. Lets see what is said when Obama goes to Iraq this month, although Obama is probably scared to talk to Nouri al-Maliki because it could mean a time table that he is for, I mean against, wait for, yeah I’m for a 16 month time table.
