Iraqis Get Religious Freedom For Christmas

The attempts in negative spin – what with references to mere a mere “lull in violence” – are apparent in the article, but even that can’t suppress the good news:

BAGHDAD (AP) – Thousands of Iraqi Christians made their way to church through checkpoints and streets lined with blast walls, many drawing hope from a lull in violence to celebrate Christmas Mass in numbers unthinkable a year ago.
Death is never far in Iraq—two separate suicide bombings north of Baghdad killed at least 35 people and wounded scores more. But the number of attacks has fallen dramatically in the past few months—the U.S. military says by 60 percent since June.
“We did not celebrate last year, but this year we have security and we feel better,” said Rasha Ghaban, one of many women at the small Church of the Holy Family in Karradah, a mainly Shiite district in downtown Baghdad where many Christians live. “We hope our future will be better, God willing.”
Families streamed into the church’s courtyard, wrapped in heavy winter jackets to protect them from the early morning chill. Young children with neatly combed hair held their parents’ hands, and women stopped by the front door to pick through a basket of small lacy headscarves, placing them over their hair before walking in.
The pews were almost full—women toward the back and on the right side of the church, the men on the left—and still more people streamed in. Outside, police armed with automatic rifles manned a checkpoint at the corner of the narrow street, searching every passing car for possible bombs.
Christians have often been the target of attacks by Islamic extremists in Iraq, forcing tens of thousands to flee. Many of those who stayed were isolated in neighborhoods protected by barricades and checkpoints. Less than 3 percent of Iraq’s 26 million people are Christians—the majority Chaldean-Assyrians and Armenians, with small numbers of Roman Catholics.

Meanwhile, here at home, bitter and cynical partisans continue to refuse acknowledgment of any sort of progress in Iraq and continue to call for a massive withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. A withdrawal that would cripple our ability to complete this mission just as we’re closer now than ever to completing it.

I thought there was a terrible “civil war” going on there. The [C]ommunist [N]ews [N]etwork, the NYT, Dingy Harry Reid, Nancy Pee-loosey, how could they all be wrong?

LOL – “Thousands of Iraqi Christians made their way to church through checkpoints and streets lined with blast walls”

God help you if you’re on the wrong side of the wall.

What happens when the check points and blast walls disappear? You are then free to choose the Sunni or Shiite religion that dominates within the walls you are living within.

Did the blacks have freedom when they were escorted by the National Guard or Federal Marshals on their marches?

You probably believe Putin when he says that they have a democracy in Russia.

sannitized, ever the partisan anal openning.

I have to take you to task on that one, Hotel. I’m surprised that you would use such a phrase.

The word should be “orifice”, not, “opening.” Much more descriptive, don’t you think?

    This is all too juvenile.

Hannitized: We appreciate the self-analysis on your posts, but it truly is redundant. We take that for granted!

sannitized, ever the partisan anal openning.

Note that the suicide bombings of the last 3 months have been focused against A. the Iraqi Police/Army, B. innocent civilians, C. oil and industrial/power/water infrastructure. Coalition Forces have been hit in a hapahzard or incidental manner. Christians in Iraq take it in the neck simply because they are weak and the focus of ages old jealousy.

As the fundamentalist, anti-modernity factions are rejected the violence will peak, and those pushing terrorism as political expression will be increasingly isolated and marginalized. That is what is frightening the political left in America. Their handy tools, terrorists are becoming less effective, and the media and Democrat Party are vainly struggling to keep the hold over the public’s perception of the situation.

Now sannitzed will demand that everyone provode it proof of what it does in ever comment thread, and deny that it is, in fact, a partisan leftard hater of all people who refuse to bow down to its socialist stupidity.

    Lets us hear it.

What happens when the check points and blast walls disappear?

I think they put up barricades on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. What happens when they come down? Or will they?

Then you should have quoted them and posted an article on their remarks instead of this AP article that does a good job of being fair and balanced.

Further, the good news resulting from many things, including the surge, is no guarantee that the loss of blood and treasure and political capitol, caused by the Iraqi war, will be worth it. It’s going to take at least 5-10 years to see what this grand experiments produces in the way of results.

Therefore, any government official that happens to realize this comes across to me a bit more than simply “bitter, cynical or partisan”. On the flip side a similar minded moron might say: “Seems to me you’re just anxious to get another mission accomplished sign in the media so you can start comparing Bush to Reagan”.

    This is all too juvenile.

“MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” One the day that I saw that news clip with a strutting, leather-jacketed President in front of that banner, I knew that his admittedly arrogant and unstatesman-like stunt would become THE galvanizing force – the ‘defining’ moment – for all his enemies; the leftist/liberals, the anti-war folks and the dems. Because, more than anything, it is George Bush that they hate and that crudely staged event represented everything about him that they loathe.

No facts, logic or reasoning. Yawn.

    Yawn.

It’s tiring watching you guys debate yourselves and the little paranoid voiced in your head.

Socialism, socialism, that’s the only card you have. Again, yawn.

    Stupid, juvenile and boring.
