Iraqis Build Monument To The Shoe Thrower

And it’s something we Americans can be proud of.

Assisted by children at the home, sculptor Laith al-Amiri erected a brown replica of one of the shoes hurled at Bush and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki by journalist Muntadhir al-Zaidi during a press conference in Baghdad. The shoe monument, made of fiberglass and coated with copper, consists of the shoe and a concrete base. The entire monument is 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) high. The shoe is 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) long and 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) wide.

There was a time when the dissent of the sort the shoe-thrower displayed, crass and inappropriate as it was, would have earned him a death sentence. And probably some ill-treatment for his friends and family. But in today’s Iraq the dissent is tolerated, as are monuments celebrating it.
America did that, and with no help from Obama or the Democrats.
Frankly, I’m proud of the statue.
You’re welcome, Iraqis.

No, sir, likwid. I LOVE America, which is why I am concerned about her, and only want the best for her.

This is awesome! The Iraqis are expressing their thanks to George W. Bush.

By tradition, throwing a shoe is the most insulting act in the Arab world.

if the Iraqis use their democracy similarly to Americans, then they will re-construct the shoe sculpture after U.S. forces leave and make it twice as big as the first one

The Iraqi police have now removed the statue.

  • 2Hotel9

And Iraqis tore down the shoe monument.

Hey, Norway Boy? How about you prove what a great insult throwing shoes is?

  • 2Hotel9

So, daisy chain, you still have only the Saddam statue downing as the source for shoe throwing. Where are those thousands of article detailing the regular occurrence of shoe throwing as a sign of political/societal displeasure with their leaders.

Here, stupid fuck, I’ll throw you a bone.
Al Jazeera, I make a sweep through here every other day.

This one is on my bloglines feed.

MEMRI has extensive archives, you should be able to find what you are so desperately wishing for there.

IRNA usually comes up in native script, you’ll have to pick your language on the bar in upper right corner.

    Don’t forget Pakistan!

UAE may have a few. Ya think?

Sudan has a Muslim or 2.

There you go, skippydapinhead. We’ll be waiting.

  • Wing Chun Geologist

That’s not a monument. One of my work shoes dissapeared from my locker at Worlds Gym.

    I have big feet.

Oh, Norway Boy, I’m certain W violated country’s Constitution, then again, Norway is known for its all pervading cowardice and terrorist appeasement.

Rugby Reader – No, sir, likwid. I LOVE America, which is why I am concerned about her, and only want the best for her.

Yeah right. You and this guy share so many of the same values. You’re both against America’s founding values and both cheer on the enslavers over those who bring freedom.

I’ve got your number. You can’t get away with lying to me. Try another tactic.

The point is that he was able to express his dissent freely.

What dissent? The Iraqis want US out of their country. They never invited US there in the first place.

  • 2Hotel9

Thats the best you can do? Really? How about all those reports of political figures and national leaders in the Mid-East having shoes thrown at them? Hook us up, daisy chain.

  • http://www.valleydeals.com/cgi-bin/board2/YaBB.pl Kevin

Read a newspaper, Ron; George Bush isn’t President anymore. What are you going to ruminate about now?

  • Hannitized

Actually Rob, punching someone in the face is not as insulting as throwing a shoe. That is why many people beat Saddam’s statue with their shoes instead of hitting it with an object.

    From your article:

The orphans helped al-Amiri build the $5,000 structure — unveiled Tuesday — in 15 days, said Faten Abdulqader al-Naseri, the orphanage director.

“Those orphans who helped the sculptor in building this monument were the victims of Bush’s war,” al-Naseri said. “The shoe monument is a gift to the next generation to remember the heroic action by the journalist.”

There are a lot of people who are victims of this war. You can thank GWB if you like, right now there is hope for things to turn out better. But you should be honest enough to admit we don’t know what the future holds for Iraq?

The longer we stay there the more trouble is going to cause us.

I figured that since I am conversing with a non-contemplative dogmatic Reich-Wing ideologue I ought to use a source the Fundie/Con insect hive-mind can trust. Also, your denial suggests that you enjoy getting shoes thrown at you (pervert). To each his own…

    Here are valid sources:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2008/dec/15/georgebush-iraq
    http://en.ethiopianreporter.com/content/view/426/1/

Turn off Fox News and think for a change. Based on your prior responses I believe you may be far too gone.

    Stop being so stupid.

It is a shame that one of the tenets of Conservatism is honed stupidity. If the US public educational system were adequate Conservatism would have absolutely no foothold in this country. Oh well… What can we do, right?

I highly suggest that you stop paying attention to your Reich-Wing collectivist hive-mind BS and read a book (Note: Toxic authors such as Jerome Corsi, Sean Hannity, Anthony Coulter, Michael Savage, Billy O’Reilly etc. do NOT count) and/or converse civilly (and in person!) with an individual who holds ideals contrary to your own. If you do one or both of those things the human race will thank you. It is high time individuals formulate opinions for themselves rather than swallowing the extremely flawed ideology of American “Conservatism” hook-line-and-sinker.

Anyway… No matter how many times you’ve heard the contrary from your Reich-Wing propagandists the act of using one’s shoes for the purposes of insult is not a one time incident in the Arab world.

    Check these out:
    You trust Fox News doncha?

    Gain some perspective:
Since when is throwing a shoe at an loathsome and evil individual a sign of goodwill and friendship?

Bush overstepped his Constitutional bounds when he ordered the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. All those “leaders” of ours in the executive and legislative branches of our government who supported such actions clearly did not understand how our Constitutional laws limit their desire for empire. We had no legal basis for the terror and destruction to which we have subjected the people and nation of Iraq. The shoe throwing monument is just one more nose-thumbing gesture toward US by the “grateful” people of Iraq that is wholly appropriate.

  • http://sillytroll.com/ Man Train

The Bush shoe throwing incident was good and very justified, but it is no substitute for real justice. If the reporter really wanted to serve justice he should have ensured that the bottom of his shoe was caked in some kind of toxic substance such as dog shit, SARS, or bubonic plague.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

If the reporter really wanted to serve justice (?) he should have ensured that the bottom of his shoe was caked in some kind of toxic substance such as dog shit, SARS, or bubonic plague. -deranged Man boob

So, Bush liberated millions of Iraqis from a cruel and murderous dictatorship and you’re disappointed that one solitary dissident only disrespected him?

And the fact that one artist and a captive audience of possibly bored orphans made a giant shoe is totally representative of all of those millions liberated? And you’re basing this on??? What??? Nice stretch, Man Gumby!

And your definition of “justice” is execution without a trial? Wow! You talk (through your ass) about the “Reich Wing”! The Third Reich has nothing on you , Man Fascist!
BTW, do you suggest that the next time someone disagrees with Obama they should throw shoes caked with the plague? Or is this just BDS?

This monument was built by the hands of orphaned children who’s parents were killed in Bush’s war. Very appropriate.

Had this guy thrown a shoe at Saadam, first of all it wouldn’t have been on TV and secondly, there would no longer be a show thrower.

Really? The most insulting act? More insulting than, say, punching someone in the face?

    My goodness but you’re dim.

Anyway, who cares? The point is that he was able to express his dissent freely.

Wonderful thing, that freedom. And who brought it to Iraq over the protestations of defeatists like you?

Oh yeah. President Bush. With the help of soldiers who don’t disgrace their own service by unfairly impugning the military.
