Iraqi Leader: United Nations Is Responsible For Corruption In Iraq

This would be a hot story if only he’d blamed America for the corruption.

Iraq’s culture of corruption stems from the actions of the international community and the controversial UN oil-for-food scheme, the deputy prime minister Barham Saleh said on Thursday.

Speaking at a new anti-corruption forum in Baghdad, Saleh said that the programme, run between 1996 and 2003 while Iraq was under UN sanctions, and what he charged was the body’s wasteful use of money were to blame for the rampant corruption that bedevils Iraq.

“A large responsibility for the outbreak of corruption in Iraq lies on the international community,” said Saleh.

Obviously, a lot of it is a hold-over from the years of Saddam’s thugocracy, but it’s worth noting that what the international community (mostly under the auspices of the UN) did to Iraq over the last several decades in terms of perpetuating oppression and fomenting corruption is worse than anything that has happened to that country since Saddam was toppled.

The so-called “international community” is obviously a menace.

No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to find anything worse that has been done to any country in the Middle East than what the U.S. has done to Iraq.

The 2nd worse thing done was taking Palestine and giving it to the Israelis and guess who was involved in that.

The so-called “international community”.

BTW, we freed 80% of the Iraqis from the murderous reign of Saddam.  Terrible. /sarcasm

Go to December 31, 2007 and the thread about Brussels or click on my Avatar on the Right, where it starts off “MOFAL you are very good at expressing your feelings,” and at least get some facts about Palestine before repeating such ignorant rubbish.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

ews, you really are completely ignorant aren’t you? Here is a link to ‘30 Worst atrocities of the 20th Century’ where you will clearly see:
1,400,000 killed in Afghanistan civil war;
1,250,000 killed in East Pakistan massacres;
1,000,000 killed in Iran-Iraq war;
500,000 killed in India-Pakistan partition.
It took one search to find them. You really should check before you make these assertions of yours.

The second worst thing the International Community did?
It definitely is not recognising Israel as the homeland of the Jewish People. That’s just you being a twat again and expressing more Joohate.
I’d suggest it was more that we/they didn’t do enough for the millions who died at the hands of Mao Zedong or Joseph Stalin.

How about Rwanda? About a million killed, with machetes!

Damn! The Iraqis are quick learners.
It took a whole nation only seven years to learn the ways of the world and become corrupt.
Any more gems like this from the puppet government?

I love it when right wing nuts pat themseves in the back and declare victory.

Now read real slow:

Wow.  Hyperbole much?  Given the number of deaths it looks like we went to great lengths to limit civilian casualties.

The 2nd worse thing done was taking Palestine and giving it to the Israelis and guess who was involved in that.

I looked for a pre-WWII Palestine on a map.  Odd that it was absent.  Maybe it’s due to the Jooos not raping enough.  Some say the lack of rape shows a lack of respect by the Jooos.

I’m not sure how the corruption of Iraq could be blamed on the UN. The whole area is corrupt, worse due to Saddam and possibly worse due to UN but how would you judge that?  Sounds like political hot air to me.  Nice that Iraq is turning into a democracy (kind of.)

ews48,

I believe that’s the former Trans-Jordan you’re talking about… not some mythical “Palestine.”

But geo-political reality aside, can you name another country in the Middle East or South Asia which is a self-sustaining democracy?  Where an individual’s political, economic, and religious freedoms are as highly valued and protected as they are in the state of Israel?  Is there another Middle East country which allows the level of political dissent and debate that Israel does?  Is there another Middle East country where the so-called “Palestinians” enjoy anywhere near the same level of economic opportunity that they do in Israel?

As I recall, America is supposed to stand for those very same ideals of personal freedom, democratically elected government, and economic opportunity for all, regardless of their religious or ethnic heritage.  If you can name another Middle East country with a better record of enforcing those ideals by all means please name it for us!

The rampant corruption within the UN comes, in point of fact, FROM Middle and Far Eastern culture, not the other way around. Baksheesh/Bakhshish. Look up that term, then wrap your head around the concept.

What we call corruption they call the natural order of society. What we call bribery they call the cost of doing business. What we call nepotism they call good management.

Baksheesh, it permeates every level of society, every form of government in the ME. Asia has its own particular flavor of the same.

Baksheesh/Bakhshish: Payment to a governmet official to either speed something up or allow something to happen.
Thank you 2Hotel9 for pointing that corruption is embedded in that society. United Nations or anyone else did nothing to corrupt Iraq.

ellinas on January 7, 2008 at 01:30 pm

United Nations or anyone else did nothing to corrupt Iraq.

You just don’t get it, e!  The vast sums of graft money that flowed into Iraq from “oil for food” made things exponentially worse, and the UN was directly responsible for that.  Increasing graft in that country was like giving 151 rum to an alcoholic.
