Interesting: NDGOP Director Steps Down

A surprise move:

Less than 10 months after he was announced as the new executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party, Paul Sorenson has announced he will resign from the post.

Sorenson announced his resignation in a letter to leaders of the party on Thursday. He said the resignation is effective Sunday.

Party chairman Gary Emineth announced Sorenson as the executive director on Jan. 27. Sorenson came to North Dakota to work for the Republican Party in the weeks leading up to the 2008 election. He took over the director spot from Michael Bommarito, who stepped down in December 2008.

Sorenson said there is “nothing else I’m moving on to,” but decided to leave for a number of personal reasons. He said he is getting married soon and plans to return to Indiana. He plans to look for new employment after the first of the year.

If you’re going to resign right now is the best time to do it politically speaking.  With the holidays coming up there won’t be much politics going on outside of wrangling amongst potential candidates for the party’s nomination to run in the upcoming election year, but that has little to do with the executive director.

So who should the next executive director be?  Well, these are contentious times for Republicans.  In North Dakota there is a serious split between big government Republicans, who have presided over massive budget increases over the last four years and opposed tax cuts, and conservative Republicans who are getting a little tired of being painted with the big-government Republican brush.

Perhaps the new executive director for the NDGOP should be someone from North Dakota.  And someone who appeals to the disgruntled conservatives in the state.
