Intellectual Cancer: Political Indoctrination At The University Of Delaware.

We all know that our universities have become havens for the water-bearers of political correctness, but if this doesn’t ring a very loud alarm bell about the fact that our colleges are becoming political indoctrination centers - then nothing will. The emphasis in the following quotes are mine:

NEWARK, Del., October 30, 2007—The University of Delaware subjects students in its residence halls to a shocking program of ideological reeducation that is referred to in the university’s own materials as a “treatment” for students’ incorrect attitudes and beliefs. The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware’s residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is calling for the total dismantling of the program, which is a flagrant violation of students’ rights to freedom of conscience and freedom from compelled speech.

So…anyone with a view that is divergent from the one held by the University requires “treatment”? Note the use of the word “requires”. The students aren’t given an option whether they want to participate or not. In Orwellian fashion, they must be “treated”.

It gets better. According to the school all white people by the very fact of their birth, are racist, and the school is training people to force the students to accept that view:

The university’s views are forced on students through a comprehensive manipulation of the residence hall environment, from mandatory training sessions to “sustainability” door decorations. Students living in the university’s eight housing complexes are required to attend training sessions, floor meetings, and one-on-one meetings with their Resident Assistants (RAs).The RAs who facilitate these meetings have received their own intensive training from the university, including a “diversity facilitation training” session at which RAs were taught, among other things, that “[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality.”

I can’t begin to find the words - without the unchecked use of profanities, that is - that describe how I feel about this. Those kids are being forced to submit to political re-education. Not asked. Not cajoled. Forced. This is ugly and dangerous, and if we don’t wake up and wake up soon this will spread like a cancer.

And bear this in mind….a cancer is a mindless thing that spreads inexorably and eventually kills its host. It never occurs to the cancer that when the host dies, it dies too.

And this is a clear illustration that the liberal/progressive-politically correct mindset is the intellectual cancer of our time.

Thanks to Hot Air, Blue Crab Boulevard, and Weasel Zippers for this one.

The short answer to this nonsense is to leave this school or transfer at the next semester.  Such actions are depreciating the value of degrees earned at this school.

Where is the tolerance of other views?

“Moral Philosophy”?  Apparently, there are no moral absolutes and to think or behave otherwise is absolutely immoral.

The bigots responsible for this mind control ought to be institutionalized.

I am not shocked at all! I am only shocked it hasn’t happened sooner and in more schools!

All over this country we are forcing elementary, middle and high school students to be indoctrinated in various liberal beliefs, like Algores global warming nonsense! The liberals have long ago seized almost absolute control over our children through the schools and the damn NEA, this is just one more step in that evil, socialist process.

What will be done about it? Not a damn thing! Oh people will complain and feel upset and even powerless, but they won’t go to the polls and vote for people for the school board that won’t submit to this liberal tyranny and for other elected officials to fight this trend. Why? They will vote their own selfish economic interests, ‘who will give me more of other peoples money without demanding anything from me.’ That trumps morality, tolerance of opposing views and an educational system that is open to a wide range of ideas without demanding conformity and aderence to liberal dogma.

In California they have a political adevertisement sponsored by the California Teachers Association demanding people contact their representatives and ask them not to support legislation to extend the “No Child Left Behind” program, they call it the Bush plan, forgetting that the old alcoholic Ted “I kill my dates” Kennedy actually designed every part of that legislation. Why be against it? CTA says it is unfair to demand teachers make students be able to pass minimum educational standards for advancement. Liberals hate accountability! Well, except making teachers accountable to promote liberal beliefs!

In keeping silent about evil, in burying it deep within us, so that it appears nowhere on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousandfold in the future.

Here’s another RA account that goes into more detail.

Lik,

I just read the post to that link. Thanks. The whole thing is appalling.

BUT….I was encouraged that the young person who wrote the article - along with at least some of her friends - was able to see through what was going on and were still able to think for themselves.

How dare the University of Delaware force these poor children to not only choose to attend that specific university, but also to live in university housing? I mean, my God! How can the University of Delaware force random kids to live on their dorms, completely against their will? That’s appalling!

Next thing you know, they’ll have dress codes and anti-alcohol and cohabitation policies. The horror!

In other words… the opportunity to live on University of Delaware property is a privilege, not a right. The University is entitled to make reasonable regulations for the students whom they’ve allowed to live there; if students don’t like the standard residence hall regulations (either the “no racism” ones above or the “no beer” type), they can leave, and 100 will be lined up after them to take their place.

davey, stick to telling us how infanticide makes you morally superior, at anything else you are a moron. Well, at that too.

Twit, the key word in your comment is “reasonable”.  Perhaps you would like to explain how the reeducation of dormatory students is “reasonable”?

OK. The University can do whatever the fuck they want. Students who don’t like it can get an apartment. Simple enough for you?

No one is being forced to do anything here. If you don’t like the rules in place at the University of Delaware dorm rooms… don’t live in the University of Delaware dorm rooms. Christ, everyone’s playing the victim card.

Dave on October 31, 2007 at 02:59 pm

Dave,

Did you actually bother to read the linked article? It’s pretty extreme when forcing others to see things your way is called “treatment”.

That’s what Kesey decribed in One Flew Over A Cuckoo’s Nest. It shouldn’t happen in a university.

davey, convine us that infanticide makes you morally superior and perhaps I will take you seriously.

Ah, hell, who am I trying to fool. No one will ever take you seriously. Never mind.

The University can do whatever the fuck they want.

That is undoubtedly one of your most stupid statements (although you have posted some almost as bad).  The university has the right to specify living conditions of the dorms as part of the lease agreement e.g. no pets, etc but they certainly don’t have a right to indoctrinate the leasees with dogma that has nothing to do with living conditions and is imposed outside the lease agreement.  In that respect, dorms are no different than apartments or other leased spaces.

Dave is being disingenuous in his defense of the University of Delaware. Freshman, who are the targets of the ‘re-education’ program are REQUIRED to live on campus in a dorm. Indeed, Dave is a perfect example of how such an indoctrination program can be imposed… he sees no problem!

davey claims moral superiority because he advocates killing babies, so consider the source.

I was also a Resident Assistant for the University of Delaware before I transferred out of state in 2006. FIRE IS JUSTIFIED in its accusations. In regards to previous comments stating that students should just go elsewhere, that is very unfair to in state students since Delaware has a very limited university selection, and out of state tuition is high.

Here’s what I have to say on this topic:

The Delaware RA hiring process is very slanted towards people who profess the same beliefs as the residence life (Reslife) administration. If your opinions on topics such as diversity, homosexual rights (and more subtly, politics) differ from the university, you are not likely to be hired. Once employed, RAs are put through intensive, mind numbing training for a few weeks during the summer and at least once later in the year.

I personally encountered the “Every person of European decent is privileged and benefits from racism” type remarks, among many others which weren’t so bad yet still controversial and presented as unarguable dogma in which Reslife’s opinion was the only correct opinion. Every week, RAs are put under great pressure by their Hall Directors to “promote diversity” on a constant basis through mandated social interactions, bulletin boards on approved or mandated topics, and mandated programs which residents are told they have to attend. UD’s RAs often aren’t as laid back as ones you may be familiar with due to these reasons.

The forced programs while I was an RA were ridiculous and poorly designed, but they did show a trend of becoming more belligerent towards re-educating students into accepting university beliefs.

Often there was a greater emphasis on the re-education programs then actually helping the residents have a successful and enjoyable college career. Usually, only freshmen residents are gullible enough to easily get to attend these programs, but particularly zealous RAs will use various forms of coercion such as disciplinary favoritism. Usually the less-than-zealous RAs are weeded out over the course of the year.

While the messages that UD’s Reslife program espouses are generally positive in my opinion, the staff often goes too far in promoting them, allowing them to be fairly called a form of indoctrination.  This zealousness can have serious negative effects for students.  An example would be the Jewish student who put up a joke Hitler profile on Facebook and was promptly suspended. The student was re-admitted over the next semester when he got a lawyer who pointed out that such an action was a violation of free speech. The university claimed the people offended and who brought the issue to Judicial Affairs were just students, but they were RAs – I know them! Poor taste in humor on a non-university run website should not have been the university’s business, and this is just one example of how Reslife’s dogma can compel overreaction and cause harm – I know of many others, but this post has already goten pretty long.

I also just wanted to ask that Reslife Director Kathleen Kerr be treated with respect in any justifiably outraged correspondence, as she is a really nice lady. Some of the others on the UD Reslife staff are more responsible for things going to far…

(BTW, you can Google my name to find a UDaily article which proves I was an RA at Delaware)

Sure, you may post my comment and fix any gramatical/spelling errors if you’d like. (I just noticed “goten” and “to” instead of “too” - sorry about that.)

Thanks,

HEY! Don’t try to out grammarNazi us. We is all up in properly grammatical stuff. Damnit!

I moved your comment along to those who would appreciate it, copied in full, your name prominent and clearly visible. My wife, an Oglethorpe University Grad is suitably pissed off about this crap. Alumni are the people colleges and universities are terrified of angering. And this shit is angering a great many of them.
