Insider Email: Senator Kent Conrad Will Be Approving Who Will Ask Questions At Health Care Event

To see a map and list of all of the events being attended by North Dakota’s congressional delegation during the recess, click here.
According to recent reports, Senator Kent Conrad is going to be holding events at 23 locations around the state of North Dakota and whether or not these events will be open to the public will be “up to the hosts.” This is from an Associated Press report quoting Conrad:

Conrad says he plans 26 listening sessions to focus on health care reform. He says that whether they will be open to the general public depends on the local hosts.

That’s what Conrad is telling the public, but according to an email written by Conrad staffers to a local organizer of an event in Center, ND which has been forwarded to me by a reader, it’s not the truth. I’ve put the entire email (which was written by Bismarck Conrad staffer June Veit) at the bottom of this post. It’s worth noting that the email stresses that all are welcome at the event (perhaps they’re embarrassed by the stunt they pulled in Harvey), but here’s some excerpts which indicate that the events will be carefully scripted and entirely managed by him and his staff:

Thank you for agreeing to host Senator Conrad’s healthcare listening session in Center.
We very much appreciate your willingness to set up the meeting for Oliver County, invite 3-4 local area individuals to speak about health care, and invite key members of the community and Oliver County to attend the session with Senator Conrad. …
The intent of the meeting is to provide a forum for the Senator to hear from key local individuals about the current healthcare system. It will also give the Senator a chance to explain the issues that impact North Dakota in developing healthcare reform.
The meeting will be a listening session to exchange ideas and information with local healthcare providers and interested parties. Given the Senator’s limited time availability in Center, it will be important to invite those individuals who can provide meaningful input and dialogue.
….
· We would like to hear from 3 or 4 individuals selected to make a statement concerning local healthcare issues.
· These individuals will be seated at the front tables.
· Each individual will be given 3 minutes to make a statement.
· Those speaking should represent a cross section of local interests to avoid repetition as much as possible.
The Senator’s office will need to review the list of those invited to make statements prior to the meeting. To the extent possible, please provide the names of those invited to speak, who/what they represent, and a mailing address and phone contact for each of the speakers, by late Fri. morning (Aug. 7). We recognize this is very short notice, but will appreciate as many details as are available by Friday, and the rest as soon as you have them.

So this will be a “listening” event, but the people doing the talking will be carefully selected by Conrad’s local allies and approved by his office. If you’re not invited and approved by the Senator and his allies you don’t get to talk.
Does that meet any definition of “forum” you’ve heard of?
It’s pretty clear to me that this event is really just a bit of heavily choreographed theater intended to promote the idea that the Senator is listening to his constituents while not actually allowing any spontaneous or non-scripted interaction with constituents. It’s, well, astroturf. And I’m willing to bet that every single event the Senator puts on during the recess will be exactly like this one. Because the Senator doesn’t really care what you think. He doesn’t really intend to listen to you. He’s made up his mind, and now he just needs to create the appearance that the position he’s already settled on is one he’s reached after listening to his constituents.
Senator Conrad should be ashamed of himself. Here’s the full email:

Tell me—why are conservatives so goddamn childish?

Tsk. Tsk. Always with the childish whining and over-generalizations!
Mr. Off: I give to you the Socratic admonition to “Know thyself”, because it’s obvious that you don’t know Jack!

Follow these links to see how the Conrad town hall actually played out. Despite Conrad’s intentions, this was NOT ORRCHESTRATED. He got beat up pretty bad by the left and the right.

How much are people paying for this “privilege”?

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

    Democracy is so messy!

  • JuneBug

So they use a local government building for this and don’t invite the public? Last I checked the Civic Center is a public building and unless the person who put on the forum paid for the use of the building, then it should be open to anyone to attend/speak.

  • heaper

The first principle of our nation is the right of individuals to self-government. This is why we fought the revolutionary war. Does this sound like self-government? Or is this more like authoritarianism? Kent Conrad has decided what is

    best

for us and, according to his actions, we do not have a right to communicate what we really think is in our best interest.

  • ndhojo

I agree w/ heaper. I beleive though we must at least put our names in the hat. If we don’t Mr Conrad’s office can and or will spin it that we did ask for a meeting or a chance to be heard. It’s my opinion Mr Conrad is showing his true colors. Then again it’s obivious he engages in special interest like so many of our elected officials.

These were the same slackers who had fits when they were paranoid about George Bush’s mythical “do not admit” list.

  • jimmypop

i telling you… this is SMART. the more he talks, the greater the chance he has to lose. its best for him to show up, get his picture taken on a farm wearing his flannel shirt (laundered and pressed like every farmer I know) and run quickly home……. to DC.

  • sbark

So Conrad is going to approve those who can even ask the quesitons…from the approved list of who can even attend…

…and they want us to beleive that the Liberals will not want to “approve” of who gets to choose end of life decisions…….

  • sayanything-7715

If Conrad and Dorgan are populists, then why would they not want to live up to the title. Let the people talk. I’ve noticed that the americans that are showing up at these meetings are only gettting angry because they are not being heard, so there temper escalates.

  • Jack

    Rob:

Don’t worry. I’m sure the screaming birthers will still show up in force to shout down anyone less crazy than they are.

Aren’t you proud that the birthers and the lunatics are your comrades?

  • Jack

…calling anyone who disagrees crazy and extremist.

Not everyone, Rob. Just you and your allies—Robert108, TomTom, the birthers, and all the rest. These are the people you associate with on this issue, Rob.

I bet you just burst with pride every time you and your comrades throw a temper tantrum at a town hall, right?

  • sbark

quote from article: Conrad says he plans 26 listening sessions to focus on health care reform.

He says that whether they will be open to the general public DEPENDS on the local hosts.

my take….that way he can deflect any blame for invite only onto the “local hosts”…..

the local hosts are to invite only those “who can provide meaningful dialoge”………

instead of being blundt like as with Harvey…it took them a weekend to bring in plausible deniability…..

  • pparets

    Jack says…

I bet you just burst with pride every time you and your comrades throw a temper tantrum at a town hall, right?

Radical leftists shut down conservative speaker at Columbia University. They were later described as ‘patriots’ by leftist bloggers and democrats.

    What say you, Jack?

  • Bat One

How about some “meaningful dialogue” about that million dollar beach house and the Countrywide mortgages that don’t show up on the Senator’s official Financial Disclosure reports?

  • Jack

    What say you, Jack?

Your story is probably fake—almost everything conservatives say about the health care debate is a lie—but even if it’s true two wrongs don’t make a right.

I wish conservatives could understand that, but they don’t.

Tell me—why are conservatives so goddamn childish?

  • 2Hotel9

Poor jackoff, terrified of one little piece of paper, while real Americans are showing up at townhall meetings with 1017 pieces of paper, which members of Congress have REFUSED to actually read.

But its OK, whiny lying cunt, just keep whining and lying. Its all you have. Oh, and assaulting elderly people, you Democrats love doing that.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

The meeting is open to the public, but only those Conrad approves will talk.

I think we should flood the meeting with people holding signs asking “Why can’t I ask a question?”

  • sayanything-6955

This guy is sleazier than I thought!

Because the Senator doesn’t really care what you think. He doesn’t really intend to listen to you. He’s made up his mind, and now he just needs to create the appearance that the position he’s already settled on is one he’s reached after listening to his constituents.

He knows if he goes out to the real folks, he will have his ass handed to him. Jerk!

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Don’t worry. I’m sure the screaming birthers will still show up in force to shout down anyone less crazy than they are.

Aren’t you proud that the birthers and the lunatics are your comrades?

Boy, you liberals are just winning people over to your side in droves by calling anyone who disagrees crazy and extremist.

Keep shooting yourself in the foot, pal.

  • sayanything-6955

I think we should flood the meeting with people holding signs asking “Why can’t I ask a question?”

    Its on! Brilliant Rob.
