The place looks nicer than the dorm I paid to stay in while I was at college.

Give it time and it will look like almost every other dirty jail in America.

The only thing separating this one from the rest are the materials used. Where there are normally walls, there are windows. Where there is normally dirty concrete, there is natural wood.

This is clearly not a high security prison.

Studies have been done showing that nicer prisons actually save money.  While the initial cost might be more, they require far less security and there are fewer problems.

One of the things that cracked us up as we sweltered 12 to a GP medium tent eating T-rats in Somalia, was a bunch of bedwetters whining about how cruelly mistreated a bunch of prisoners, IIRC in Texas, were because the were forced to live in GP medium tents, and eat something that sounded a lot like T-rats. Comparing, neither we nor they could just up and go home, they also had amenities we didn’t, like TV and gyms, but then we did have the occasional incoming, so there is that.

At this point some leftoid will state that we volunteered - so did the prisoners - no one (not even “society") forced them to be criminals.

Oh good god Cook County Jail is absolutely nothing like what is pictured there.

It is a black hole of Calcutta, way overcrowded, filled with the most vicious criminals in the most gang-ridden city in the U.S.

You don’t even want to drive by it, let alone spend an hour there.

Speaking in America, what’s the law? There are tens of thousands of federal laws and regulations. They’ve lost count. And that’s before we even get to state, county, and local laws.

Society doesn’t force one to break laws? Bullshit. The people, their representatives, and the organizations granted power by the representatives make laws upon laws upon laws. There are a lot of restrictions on freedom. Nobody knows all of them or even how many.

I agree that prisons shouldn’t be plush. My only point was that in this particular example it was not the American taxpayers who were benig ripped off. Yes it’s still wrong even though it’s in Austria and not America, but I’ll let the Austrians worry about that. We have plenty of examples of wasted tax money in America so I don’t feel that I need to be concerned about what other countries choose to do with their tax funds.
