If The Economy Is So Bad Why Are Movies Setting Box Office Records?

Anyone else having a hard time believing that we’re on the verge of an economic apolcalypse, as the liberals and the media tell us, while a movie about a caped crusader is setting records at the box office?

The amount of opinion that is shaped by sensational media reporting instead of reality is amazing sometimes.

You know it will be spun to be “people are so miserable, they go to the movies to escape and be cool because they can’t afford to run their air conditioning.”

The movies did very well during the depression--that was the thirties, for you young pups. That was before DVD’s, cells, blackberries, Ipods, etc.

Were people paying up to a days wages to attend?  What was he cost of a movie during the depression relative to an average wage?

HG on July 20, 2008 at 09:24 pm

Only a guy like Rob could validate a recession by pointing to movie sales which usually precursor to increased alcohol consumption.

Rob Port....stuck on stupid with the pedal to the metal.

Rob,

Next you can try something equally as stupid, such as:

If drugs are bad for people, then why are they doing them?

or

If unprotected sex is dangerous, then why are so many people doing it in great numbers?

or

If people are supposedly making less, why do their credit card purchases go up then?

F-ing hilarious.

Hannitized on July 20, 2008 at 09:48 pm

They’re just escaping “a recession” that isn’t a recession.

Don’t try to make sense of the doom and gloomers.

Dang! I was completely un-aware that movie sales leads to increased alcohol consumption.
Could you PLEASE show any legitimate study that reflects that theory?

RebTex on July 20, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Since there has yet to be one month of negative growth, we are not in a recession, no matter how hard the leftie liars try to sell one.

And foreclosure records, and unemployment records, trade imbalance records, bank collapse records, market lows............etc.

Buy American, Buy Union Made… the job you save might be your own.

Buzz on July 21, 2008 at 03:22 am

...and unemployment records...

What’s the record?

...trade imbalance records...

Why does this even matter.

I have a “trade imbalance” with my neighborhood grocery store. Is this a bad thing?

likwidshoe on July 21, 2008 at 03:33 am

Funny, here in the actually economically depressed region of Pennsylvania unemployment is way down. As for foreclosures, the majority of them are properties that have been multiply refinanced, ending in an ARM which has adjusted upwards steadily.

Here is a hint, buzzed, don’t want to lose your home? Don’t float multiple loans that culminate in payments that you could never cover. Idiot.

Well, 1 in 4 females between the age of 14 to 19 has one form of STDs or another so it appears unprotected sex is dangerous in great numbers.

In any case, the economy is so bad the Congressional Democrat majority wants to tax increase the price paid at the pump.  In a Marxist world is not taxation a sign of economic prosperity?

syn on July 21, 2008 at 04:53 am

I was going to make Halitbis’s point about the movies being popular in the 30’s.

On the other hand there wasn’t much else to do for an escape at the time.

Now we’ve got pretty good entertainment available at home…

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Guys like Whistler killed vaudeville.

WOOF on July 21, 2008 at 06:14 am

No. The fact that the majority of vaudeville acts sucked killed vaudeville.

At least according to George Burns Woof is right.  Burns said that Vaudeville existed alongside movies for years.

However when radio came along and people could be entertained in their own home Vaudeville went by by.  Or you could say they got their picture back.

Radio

The Whistler began with the ominous narration:

I am the Whistler, and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales, hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes ... I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak.

Reality TV, American Idol and its’ offshoots are the reincarnation of vaudeville.
Haven’t seen the new Gong Show, but loved the DaDa anarchy of the old one.

How is this even a valid comparison? Rob’s pointing out that people are spending a lot of money on entertainment. During a supposed recession.

Your question sounds stupid on it’s own, let alone as a rebuke to someone else.

Hannitized, stuck FIRMLY on stupid, with no signs of ever changing.

When we look at the “socialist paradise” that is Cuba, we must remember that a sizable share of the misery those people suffer is directly attributable to Che Guevara bringing Castro into power, and giving him many of the policies that have caused so much pain. The real symbol of Che should be the raft, to remind us of all those who have died on rafts in the ocean trying to escape the Cuban nightmare and get to freedom. And had he not been killed, begging for his life like a coward, he would’ve done the same thing again and again in countries all throughout Latin and South America. His actions have inspired terrorists across a continent and caused countless deaths.

And foreclosure records, and unemployment records, trade imbalance records, bank collapse records, market lows............etc.

Foreclosures have gone up because irresponsible borrowing has gone up. Same reason credit card debt has been going up for the past 2 decades. People are spending money they just don’t have.

Unemployment is historically low. The percentage of unemployment has risen even as job creation has continued. A raise in unemployment doesn’t necessarily mean negative growth. It means more workers are coming into the market than jobs are being created. Anything between 3-5% unemployment is considered prime in economics. Right now we have 5.4% unemployment which is just barely out of the best range.

Bank problems are the result of the irresponsible borrowing. You’re trying to pretend that one problem is two.

Markets are hardly at all time lows.

You just keep repeating the same tired shit in every thread, even though you’ve had the same argument shot down in 30 other threads before. Argument ad nauseum (proof by assertion) is tiring, but Say Anything’s not like everywhere else...we’re not going to stop correcting you just because it gets annoying.

For those wondering about the new Gong Show with Dave Atell, I was disappointed.
Chuck Barris must be rolling in his box.

It’s called escapism. Plus the money they spend isn’t theirs anyway.

Chuck Barris is still alive. Maybe he is rolling in his barc-o-lounger.
