If The Government Is Going To Take Credit For Businesses, Should They Take Credit For Drunk Drivers Too?

According to President Obama, “if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.” He argues that society helps along the way with things like public roads, public schools, etc., etc.

Setting aside for a moment the objections to such a suffocating, myopic view of the relationship between the individual and government, what happens if we take that line of thinking to it’s logical conclusion? A reader emailed me tonight making just that point.

If the government can take credit for our business successes because it builds roads, can it take credit for drunk driving and other sort of traffic tragedies because it built those roads? Where does the government’s responsibility stop, and our individual responsibility kick in?

If that sounds absurd, so does the idea of the government taking credit for our business success.
