If Social Security Checks Stopped Coming It Would Only Be Because Obama Decided Not To Send Them

Because even if the debt limit isn’t raised, the federal government has enough money to fund them, plus all the other things the Democrats are saying would be shut down.

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama told CBS News today that there may not be enough money in the U.S. Treasury to cover Social Security checks after Aug. 3 if Congress does not agree to lift the legal limit on the federal debt and allow his administration to borrow more money.

“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Obama told CBS News anchor Scott Pelley in an interview.

However, according to the Daily Treasury Statements published by the U.S. Treasury Department, the ongoing flow of federal tax revenue since the Treasury declared that it had hit the debt limit on May 16 has been more than sufficient to cover the combined costs of federal spending on interest payments, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the Veterans Affairs department and federal workers wages and insurance benefits (including wages and insurance benefits for military personnel).

To be clear, something would have to give. Some spending would have to be cut, the government would just have to prioritize. Maybe Obama could stop flying around the country on Air Force One campaigning for re-election for a while. That alone wouldn’t do it, but you get my drift.

As usual, in order to scare Americans away from demanding less government, the proponents of big government immediately threaten the most popular sorts of spending. It’s a cheap political gimmick.

“It’s a cheap political gimmick.” It’s worse than that. It is an attempt to scare seniors on fixed incomes. It is despicable.

You think this scares seniors?   The Bingo parlors, and dimly lit Indian Casinos, are terrified.

And, to hear the Democrats talk, cat food manufacturers!

Why does Obama hate the blue hairs and greedy geezers?

Why would Social Security checks be at risk if we hit the debt ceiling???  I thought Social Security was safe…all that money was safely stashed away in the “Lock Box”.   Does this mean there isn’t any money in the Social Security “Lock Box”?   Who saw that coming?  I mean, its not like we need to borrow more money just to pay the entitlement IOU’s, right?

Obama is on the line with Bernie Madoff, and Michael Milken, as I write. They want to perfect the phraseology they’ll spring on us later this week.  Geithner has said he’ll give them 48 hours or he’ll do something.   Probably pee in his pants…

Correct,   SS is acutally still in the black for at least a short time projected out……….The vaunted Lock Box of the Left, which is filled with Bernake’s IOU’s of T Bonds.

Govt borrows at present 40% of what it spends………money is flowwing in out……..there is cash flow…………

Notice how the left protects the endless waves of nerdy beuracrats sitting at cubicles in countless buildings across the nation……………..at best they cut a number of petty class sailors who might well be voting GOP anyway…………

……..at the expense of Senior Citizens, who although part of a ponzi scheme, have actually contributed to SS…..Obama has robbed the bank economically of this country and now has hostages……….

Will Obama Shoot his hostages???????………..will the Left and Media condone it?

It’s a small point, but the Treasury securities on the books of Social Security’s so-called “Trust Fund” come from Treasury, not from Bernanke and the Fed.  What Bernanke has “purchased” via his Quantitative Easing programs has been from larger commercial banks, and cleverly, the proceeds of the “sales” are applied to the banks’ required reserve accounts with the Fed.  And as the reserve requirements are increased, the money created doesn’t go anywhere and for now at least has little if any inflationary effect.

          good point……appreciated

In this statement, Obama shows he is nothing but a warrior against the American people–what is wrong with this man who has no problem scaring the pants off seniors who rely soley on Social Security–he needs a good medical checkup.

They (he) want to redo, I think it was 1996, and the government shut down and blame the GOP for no social security or failing that to blackmail the GOP into surrender, the latter the most likely.

If that’s true, he’s forgetting how that turned out. When the Clinton years ended, he had not only lost the Democrat majority in both houses, and seen his health care takeover blown into confetti, but been butt raped into turning about face and ending up with a surplus when he left office. They then howled endlessly as Bush spent like Clinton did at the outset, destroying the surplus, but then turned around and accelerated spending even more in 2007-2008. Then even more 2009-present. What I am waiting for is for just ONE Republican to note these facts on the nightly news. They aren’t even trying. The Democratic Party is whining and moaning about not being able to spend several times more money than they faulted Bush and even their own guy Clinton for. Someone needs to ask why spending several times what Obama’s predecessors did is magically better than the lesser amount they spent and do it in front of the entire nation. Let’s hear a rationale for it. Bush never came close to spending near the debt cap, and his spending was too much according to them. Obama claims to be in favor of cutting, but his cuts need a debt cap raise, which means any cuts are dwarfed by spending increases, and he’s perfectly okay with this hypocrisy. Someone needs to ask the nation why and see what their reaction is. It will NOT be in the Dems’ favor.

We need a leader in the GOP that can give voice to those things clearly with conviction, not necessarily a presidential candidate, but one having command of the facts, the charisma and communication skills to make these things clear. Right now I am not hearing that voice and the silence can be deafening and potentially fatal.

        You think with lies .

2007, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told Congress he expected
the Debt Ceiling would be reached by October 1st. Democrats still
believed and spoke out against Bush Tax cuts and the Iraq War effecting
the National Debt. In September 2007 the Senate Finance Committee
approved increasing the debt to $9.82 trillion.
         This was the fifth time
since 2001 that Bush increased the Debt Ceiling.
In July 2008 George Bush signed the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, which raised the debt ceiling to $10,615 Trillion.

Plus two wars were lost and kept off the books.

The GOP needs to get the message out that Obumble would be responsible for them not getting a check.

  • Jamermorrow

Social Security checks won’t stop being issued they will just not be worth anything. Social Security will go be a pointless issue once hyperinflation hits. The stamps to mail the check will probably cost more than the amount of the check. Inflation will eliminate the relevance of social security. The government will not cut spending as long they have the printing press.

We need a national lottery once a week. Call it “President for a Day”. The winner gets to sit in the Oval Office, read something off the prompter, have lunch with Michelle, golf a round with Barry or maybe shoot hoops. You know, basically do nothing just like Obama. Best of all, you don’t have to be natural born citizen to play (just like Obama). Just pretend to be important.

    $10 per ticket X 50,000,000 per week = a half billion a week($500,000,000) x 52 weeks = $26,000,000,000 annual

    money in the bank

Barney Frank must read SAB because he’s on TV right now charging discrimination.  He Says we need to include a “Chicken Hawk” for a week feature. One day only gets him aroused , a week and he’ll have his fill, he says.

Hell, we could expand this to the entire Washington complex. “First lady for a day”, “Congress person for a day”, “VP for a day” (there’s a safe one), “SOC for a day” etc etc etc

The debt would be wiped clean in no time. What the hell, these people don’t do shit half the time anyway.

OK, so Dear Leader fails to fulfill his Constitutional obligations when he’s got the funds to do it.  IMPEACH and REMOVE from office.  Problem solved.

So, Obama has just publicly admitted what Kent Conrad and other Democrats have fervently denied, what some of us have known for years: Social Security is a Ponzi scheme.

When the debt limit is hit and cuts must come, we’ll see just what side Obama is on. Public sector unions or the aged/poor/veterans.

This is totally crazy!!!! What’s he going to do?…Hire a doctor to go around and kill “we, the people” whom have no other income to live on? I DO NOT spend my deserved social security money at bingo and casinos because I cannot afford the luxury, so to speak!! My husband and I due to illness and accidents have no other way to live, we paid in all our lives, we want our money back with interest!!!!!  Go ahead Obama, and WE will take your means to live away…..

This whole exchange shows how air-headed and in the tank for the Democrats CBS’ Scott Pelley is.  Obama’s answer implicitly suggests a situation where there is not enough money available to cover all the federal government’s obligations.  A real journalist, not a Democrat apologist, would have politely asked Obama exactly how his administration would decide which obligations would be paid and which would go unpaid.  Not a complex question, to be sure, but one which would force Obama to accept responsibility for the decision, and explain to the public how he plans to make that decision – or show the public that in true “progressive” Democrat fashion, he simply hasn’t thought that far ahead.

Instead, Pelly allowed himself to be used to broadcast the expected liberal scare tactic.  And that lack of professionalism is shameful.
