If Only Senator Menendez Were As Stingy With Our Tax Dollars As He Is With His Hookers

The Daily Caller broke the news earlier this morning that Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) doesn’t deal honestly with his hookers. Oh, and he’s been borrowing a campaign supporters private airplane to jet down to the Dominican Republican for vacations at the same contributor’s resort.

That last may actually cause Menendez more headaches with the FEC than the hookers cause with the electorate in general.

“Neither of these two women knew who “Bob” was at the time of the alleged transaction by their own admission,” writes Ed Morrissey. “How, then, did they come to realize his identity and choose to make it public?”

That’s a good question, and a reason to be at least a little skeptical of the story, but only a little.

But will it impact Menedez’s Senate race where he was the favorite to win? Not likely. Remember, Republican Senator David Vitter is still serving in the Senate after dalliances with a hooker came to light. Which is interesting, in that sex scandals just aren’t what they used to be.

Once upon a time a public revelation about hookers would have doomed a politician’s career. These days? It’s a bump on the road. Salacious and titillating for the public, but not a big enough reason for most voters to change their minds about who they’re casting their ballots for. At least some of the time, anyway, lest we forget about how things ended for Governor Sanford and his hike on the “Appalachian Trail.”
