I basic combat load should include you main weapon, preferably an assault rifle, perhaps with attached grenade launcher.
Along with this, a sidearm, such as the vaunted and venerable M1911A .45. ACP, for when you are cleaning your weapon and suddenly confronted with the enemy, or in other situations where the main weapon just isn’t available in the heartbeat you really, really need to kill someone right in front of you.
Lastly, no good Marine will ever be caught without his bayonet and/or fighting knife, preferably both, for when all has gone to hell or you simply need to quietly separate some dirtbag’s soul from his body.
While an assault rifle was supposed to strike that balance between the Mauser 98k main army rifle, high-power, long distance, accurate shooting, and the MP-40 (close range, rapid fire) it can’t be all things to all people.
That’s why a balanced weapons mix is required for the job.
At least, until we can get issued phasers, with settings like Stun, Kill, and Miss (the Stormtroopers’ favorite setting apparently)

Hsnd to hand combat will never be my forte especially at my old age. The only way I would be willing to use a knife is if I was sticking it into a sleeping enemy.
