“Human Rights” Group Investigates Cheese Steak Restaurant

Because, apparently, being able to order a cheese steak in any language you choose is a basic human right:

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A civil rights watchdog agency opened an investigation on Monday into a Philadelphia cheese steak restaurant that posted a sign saying "This is America - when ordering, speak English."

The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations complaint effectively opens a case against Geno's Steaks of South Philadelphia, said Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the agency.

The Philadelphia controversy has fed a national debate over immigration in which the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would declare English the national language and politicians have raised objections to a Spanish version of the national anthem.

The sign may violate the city's Fair Practices Ordinance, which bans businesses from discriminating on the basis of nationality or ethnicity, Lawton said.

"The complaint will say that the sign discourages patronage by non-English speakers because of their national origin and/or ancestry," Lawton, whose agency enforces the city's anti-discrimination laws, said before the official filing.

You gotta love this quote:

Roberto Santiago, executive director of the city's Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations, said he received around 50 "hate" e-mails in response to his criticism of the sign.

One from California said groups like his should be banned for representing "filthy, illegal alien invaders", he said.

"This is dividing this nation," he said. "I'm really saddened by these individuals who are upset by having to be tolerant. I'm glad I'm living in an America where comments like Mr. Vento's are out of order."

Naw… this is liberals’ diversity and inclusvieness in action here.  Agree with us, or we’ll shut you down.  And what is most pathetic of all, few libs are actually aware of the hypocrisy.

Did someone say that it was only liberals?

BatOne implied such, Rob, in his comment.  Of course, I may just not be smart enough to understand all his big words.

Nice wriggling, Rick.

Rodney: I guess.

Nice article linked in the other thread by the way.  If you ever want to write something for SA email me (contact link on the right sidebar) and I’ll set you up with a posting account.

Rick,

Actually, I implied no threat to the 1st amendment.  You, predictably, inferred it.  What I did imply was that the original story was yet another example of how liberals trumpet diversity and bray about inclusiveness, but then hypocritically go out of their way to shut off anyone with whom they disagree… and then are generally too stupid to recognize their own blatant hypocrisy.

(There is only one word in this comment that is longer than four syllables… but since that word is “hypocritically” I assume you are familiar with it’s meaning.)

Where is Hillary shrieking about his right to dissent?  After all we do speak English in this country, don’t we?  Would they be making the same point about discrimination if he had requested that they order only in Spanish?  Probably not.

I emailed Glenn Beck to see about Gene’s Steaks bumper stickers with this on them. The best part is it took these idiots 6 months to figure this out. Gene’s response will most likely be to have all his hate mongering racist employees wear t-shirts with this slogan. Turn on the Brotherly Love and let it flow.

Its not that they are “activist” judges, Puzzle dear.  It’s that they are liberal activist judges, who like their non-judicial brothers and sister bray incessantly about the 1st Amendment, but are totally clueless that there is a 2nd.

The Tower of Babel built on a Cheese Steak stand.

And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

“Uno con queso y cebollas.”

“Fuhgeddaboutit”

“Pendejo”

A great wind arose.

Yep, that’s the liberal movement these days.

That’s why they think its ok to disrupt political gatherings of a political party they disagree with, and to interfere with the speeches of people they disagree with.  Then they call that interference freedom of speech.

Fellow sick freak, huh? I knew I liked you, TH9!

I hear that some Spanish speakers in the area are all geared up to go and order in Espanol… and then to sue for discrimination if Gino won’t fill their order.

So now you can be sued for not being bilingual? If the order cannot be understood, then WTH is he supposed to do? What if I ordered in Russian, or Chinese?

I thought that making English the “official language” of this country was a stupid, unecessary legislative move before, but perhaps we should, just to avoid nonsense like this!

Several Senators who opposed their chamber’s immigration bill and favored giving special protections to the English language have Web sites in — of all the darn languages — Spanish! ¿Como?

Do you have a point.  There’s nothing in the bill from stopping a business to speak a foreign language.

On the other hand, the best way to enter the US economy is to speak English.  If you speak more better you will go more farther.

We certainly don’t want to Balkanize this country by having communties that can’t interact with the larger community.

What’s the connection between some sandwich guy and a Senator?  If the sandwich guy wants to stick to English that’s his business.

Are you suggesting the politicians to ignore the hispanic voters?

Since when are we a socialist country?  Gino has a right to run his business anyway he chooses, and to get the consequences, as far as business is concerned, of how he chooses to run his business.

Have those liberal activist judges found a “right” to order a cheesesteak in Spanish in our Constitution?  Wouldn’t surprise me.

On Quinn’s and Beck’s shows this morning they recieved calls to the effect that Gino’s was packed and had people lined up down the sidewalk. Selling cheesesteaks like hotcakes, so to speak. No response from Glenn’s website on the bumpersticker idea. I kinda was hoping Joe Brooks would drop in here and hook us up with the man, or the guy that really runs that operation, Stu.

As I recall, much the same thing happened a few years ago when the folks from PETA tried protesting Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.  I believe a couple of places were actually sold out during lunch.

Apparently if you own a restaurant, the best marketing strategy for your business is to get some looney lefties to protest.  Liberals never do seem to learn.

A nice web version of Windows Recycle Bin, how I would like to empty this trash. It is not about the sign, its about the blunt way this racist small man relates to people of spanish/latin origin. Some of you are the same way(just look at the way you think), and for those that don’t understand why the “liberal heads” and “minority groups” are upset about this, open your goddamn mind people.
