Huckabee Says His “Soul” Will Not Let Him Deny Illegals Access To Entitlements

You see, Mike Huckabee answers to a higher power than the American electorate which has indicated again and again that it would just as soon reserve entitlements for actual citizens if we’re going to have them at all.

Huckabee has been criticized by Mitt Romney and others in the GOP presidential race for supporting legislation in Arkansas that would have made all youngsters who graduate from state high schools eligible to compete for college scholarships, no matter what the legal status of their parents.

With [Chuck] Norris citing examples of children of illegal immigrants he has helped educate through his foundation, Huckabee declared that “my soul will not let me” compromise on that stand--despite the bill’s rejection in his state senate.

I guess I’m not seeing why tuition entitlements are such a moral issue.  There are some (me included) who think we shouldn’t even be subsidizing college tuition for citizens, let alone illegal immigrant fugitives who should (if justice were being served) be turned over to authorities so that they can be deported.

Here’s a video of Huck’s press meeting with Norris at his side.  It doesn’t have the exchange quoted above, but it does have Huck trying to use the fact that we let illegals be treated in emergency rooms for, well, emergencies as an excuse to extend to them health care entitlements.  Along with a bunch of other nonsense.

We really can’t let this guy be President.  And yes, I hear him when he says he beat the “Clinton machine” in Arkansas, but I really don’t want a guy who is good at out-Clintoning the Clintons.

Comments

It seems to me, that what’s important about Huckabee’s record on taxes, spending, entitlements, and illegal immigrants is that he is making both Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney look better and better by comparison.

It is harder and harder to hold either Romney’s record as governor of the bluest of states, or his religious beliefs against him when compared to those of Huckabee.  Likewise, Thompson’s easy-going, live-and-let-live social conservatism is far more appealing when compared to Huckabee’s more strident forays into social policy.

I partially agree. I think that former Governor Huckabee’s idea of scholarship’s, while well-intentioned, is fiscally irresponsible as per his support of S-CHIP. However I am troubled by the idea of deporting people who were were brought into the United States as children (the said “fugitives"), and have learned the language should not be simply forcibly deported.

In addition to the damage we will inflict upon these people as human beings, it is certainly likely that if these people return to Mexico and will either attempt to illegally enter again, and/or add to the already large amount of Mexicans with (generally) illegitimate anger towards the United States.

Why does Huckabee’s soul accept stealing? His soul is so cavalier about it. It is EVIL. Stealing is wrong. Huckabee’s soul has twisted morals.

I admit that that’s a difficult situation.  However you certainly cannot reward the parents by allowing that kid to anchor the family here.

Perhaps congress could look into an expedited immigration policy for those kids when they reach 18.

For those condemning “Huck”, as you call him, I ask you to look at the big picture.  He is actually the only one who is proposing a real solution to the problem.  It is the federal governments failure and fault.  The federal government puts the states in a position to follow laws (emergency care for all, all children will be educated, everyone must pay taxes etc.)regardless of status. That is completely contridictory to solving the illegal, and I stress the term “illegal”, immigration issue.

A secure border and deterence/punishment for illegal immigration (employer, illegal, city) at the federal level are the real answer to dealing with this crisis.  I believe that federal/state issues such as tuition aid, healthcare, employment, etc. should not dilute the importance of dealing with illegal immigration head on.

Close the door and turn off the illegal immigrant magnet at the federal level!

bigpicturewindow on November 30, 2007 at 05:03 pm

That’s pretty silly, his heart doesn’t allow to deny free stuff to reward lawbreakers, but he’s supposed to be willing to punish people who were taken in by the illegals fake ID.

I say that every government employee should turn in lawbreakers when they see it.  If they don’t they are criminals themselves.

Huck’s big plan is to give illegals amnesty and free educations and free healthcare. That is just so conservative! I don’t understand why no one thought of this before. And the real gem, imprison Americans because illegal aliens broke our laws. That is simply breathtaking.

likwidshoe, I am also troubled by the illegal immigration problem. However, I would advise you to take care with your definitions. “Stealing” is not correct, unless he uses taxpayer funds for personal use (e.g. funding vacations, giving free monies to unqualified friends for political or non-political reasons). When a public official is elected, he is given reign to delegate public money for causes as his judgment sees fit. If a governed people don’t like that, they can use a legislative body to overturn his decisions (a state legislature against him as governor, say), or vote him out of office.

I’m nothing near a legal expert; I cannot speak on what is legal or what is not. I am, however, somewhat of an expert on integrity and the definitions of “lying”, “cheating”, and “stealing”. And an elected official using money in a way that he feels improves the well-being, status or prosperity of the state he governs in an economic or social sense is not “stealing” by almost any measure. It may, I concede, be worthy of removing him from office, depending on the fortitude of dissension among those governed.

But according to the definition of stealing, I believe it does not qualify.

James Kuhn on November 30, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Huckabee only supports tuition assistance for children of illegals who have been in the school system for the full twelve years. They also must become tax paying citizens and pass several rigorous tests in order to receive the assistance. I can see his point here.

Its really a nuance difference, though. Not a huge deal. Huck opposes amnesty - that’s the big issue.

Stealing it is. Americans have repeatedly said NO to amnesty in any form whatsoever. Any elected or non-elected member of the government that shovels tax money to any form of amnesty is stealing our money.

And spare me the"they just want to build better lives"crap. They want a better life? Then overthrow the socialist non-humans driving their country into the dirt, and rebuild to sane specifications. DON"T come to my country and expect me to crawl in the dirt and swallow their socialist shit.

Regardless of Huckabee’s personal beliefs, you know any action has to go through both house’s first. I’m not going to condemn him for having compassion.

That said, considering that only 25% of all adult Americans have any formal education beyond high school, what exactly is wrong with educating more people? The Democrats don’t need more nitwits do they?

If these illegal aliens obtain further education the odds are real good they will contribute to this society. I seriously doubt that they will move back to Mexico. Most likely they will become citizens here.

With all the Pork Projects floating around DC this is hardly an earth shaker.

Mickey on December 1, 2007 at 08:01 am

Yesterday, above, I noted that Mike Huckabee is making Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney look better and better by comparison.  Now comes word that David Keene, President of the American Conservative Union, former Reaganite, and long time conservative icon, has endorsed Mitt Romney for President.

Keene’s standing among mainstream conservatives is surpassed only by that of Mr. William F. Buckley, Jr., and his endorsement had been sought by nearly every GOP candidate.  Keene had worked for Ronald Reagan as a regional political director since 1976.  In announcing his support of Romney, Keene said he was,

...convinced that Mitt Romney represents our best hope for 2008.

adding that he would work to persuade,

...fellow conservatives that if we are serious about electing a conservative president in 2008, it’s time to unite behind his (Romney’s) candidacy.

Apparently, Huckabee’s social conservatism was not sufficient to offset his record of fiscal liberalism and his porous position on illegal immigration.

Needless to say, Ron Paul was not given any serious consideration by Keene and the ACU.

Stealing it is. Americans have repeatedly said NO to amnesty in any form whatsoever. Any elected or non-elected member of the government that shovels tax money to any form of amnesty is stealing our money.

Again, no it is not. One definition of stealing:
steal·ing, noun
–verb (used with object)
1.  to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, esp. secretly or by force

Huckabee, as an elected official, has both the permission and right; the permission was given via his election, and the right given by the powers assigned to said elected official by past laws and measures of his state (if we’re talking about a governor, for instance). An elected official is not required to vote merely by what the majority of his electorate believes. A Republic is not a gussied-up direct democracy. Citizens elect representatives to represent them, yes; no official could represent his constituency perfectly anyhow, as a small percentage of our country cares about politics outside the presidential elections.

It is not stealing, and unless someone offers some reason or logic to the contrary, there it stands.

James Kuhn on December 1, 2007 at 11:20 am

And how exactly do you call amnesty a program which requires illegal aliens to legally become citizens per the channels that everyone else has to go through? This is a great program!

James Kuhn on December 1, 2007 at 11:22 am

James,

Your brief discussion of “stealing” is a point well taken.  But this,

...how exactly do you call amnesty a program which requires illegal aliens to legally become citizens per the channels that everyone else has to go through?

is simplistic nonsense that borders on dishonesty.  “Everyone else” doesn’t sneak into the country illegally (that is, in violation of the law), settle in as comfortably as they can, and wait for some pandering politician looking for votes to buy to come along and offer a “path toward citizenship.”

“Everyone else” makes the necessary and admittedly tedious applications BEFOREHAND and then, only after receiving legal permission comes here and begins working on their avowed citizenship application.

There is no universal “right” to the benefits of American citizenship, and those who avail themselves of those benefits illegally, by cutting in line, as it were, have no justifiable claim on the American taxpayer’s compassion via Mike Huckabee’s conscience.

“Poverty of goods is easily cured; poverty of the mind is irreparable.”

No, it might be simplistic nonsense that borders on ignorance. I haven’t lied in 8 and a half years. You can always trust that I am saying what I at least believe to be true at all times.

I said what I did because I’m still somewhere in the middle of the illegal immigration debate. I don’t think they should be deported, and I don’t think they should be leeching our economy. Did the immigrants from Ireland have to pre-apply for documents before escaping the potato famine? How about all the rest of our historic immigrants? This is a nation of immigrants, and back in the days where few could even read or write, I doubt there was so stringent a process. Maybe our process is too long.

James Kuhn on December 1, 2007 at 11:49 am

Did the immigrants from Ireland have to pre-apply for documents before escaping the potato famine? How about all the rest of our historic immigrants?

That’s irrelevent as long as they followed the laws in place at the time.

On the other hand if someone did break the laws they are long dead and therefore the issue is moot.

You cannot reward people for breaking the law which is what amnesty is.  (Anything short of returning them to where they belong is amnesty).

If fact why enforce any laws if you’ll blatantly ignore this law and reward the lawbreakers.

Jesus Christ did say to help the poor, but he also condemned the corrupt government officials causing the poverty. Huckabee helped a regime of lazy crooks known as the Mexican “Government” and put their responsibility on the Arkansas Taxpayer. Here’s an article I wrote when Hillary Clinton claimed that it was “Christian” to support illegal immigration:

It’s as fair to call Huckabee a thief for giving tax money to illegals as it is to call a fence a thief for receiving stolen goods.

In both ways they aren’t the original thief but they are part of the whole criminal enterprise.

Wow. That’s quite a definition.

am·nes·ty /ˈæmnəsti/[am-nuh-stee]
-noun, plural -ties, verb, -tied, -ty·ing.
1. a general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
2. Law. an act of forgiveness for past offenses, esp. to a class of persons as a whole.
3. a forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

I suppose according to that third definition, amnesty could mean to pardon the one offense of coming here illegally. I think according to the current political jargon, however, that amnesty refers to a complete and total vindication of illegal immigrants, in addition to granting them citizenship unfairly. I certainly do not advocate that.

As I have mentioned before, the Fair Tax would take care of this problem. Our deportation enforcement is clearly not working (what are there now - 12 million? 20 million?). So we need to either fix that or come up with something that works rather than arguing ineffective polemics. Just my opinion.

No, I don’t want socialism. What are you calling socialism? Scholarships?

You take a single penny of my money and you are stealing.

That’s true. In fact, at the college I spoke of - the Virginia Military Institute - one would be expelled for picking up a penny off the ground. If you saw someone pick up a penny and didn’t report it, you were tolerating it, and would be expelled as well. So you and I don’t differ on what stealing is, but on whether or not it is applicable to a government official elected by the people and given reign to use public monies as he sees fit.

You have yet to even broach my reasons for believing this to be within the proper bounds of an elected official. I’m beginning to doubt you will, either.

Oh, and I said that I hated socialism several posts ago. Do you read and try to understand what people write, or do you just skip straight to your own sanctimonious screeching?

It is funny that you of all people have that as a signature, what with our current argument. One website gives this comment:

Whatever plan the Field Commander gives, you MUST follow it through from beginning to end. You must not
deviate from it, or change it to your own ideas. Even if it results in defeat, you must not abandon it. In a unit working as a team, even a bad plan can result in victory. The instant members of the team begin to deviate from the plan, the battle is lost. At that moment, we are no longer a team, but a group of individuals each with his own agenda. Remember this, and when on the field, live it.

If you are so against the actions of elected officials when they don’t follow your exact wishes, why do you have that as a signature? President Bush has been soft on illegal immigration, and he is your commander-in-chief, much higher than the field commander mentioned here.
