How Much Can We Continue To Pay For Increased Attendence at the Alerus Center?

Financial Disaster on the Prairie

On Wednesday the Grand Forks Alerus commission released their brutal financial results. While they claimed that they made a small profit they actually lost over a million dollars. Their claim assumes that a payment they receive from a sales tax is a operating revenue that they earned and their losses on concerts don’t count. Of course they have a word for private businessmen that try to claim such things; jailbirds.
Now the apologists are saying that the center was never about making a profit, it’s all about quality of life, and that must be better because attendance is up over last year.
I don’t remember them making the claim that quality of life was declining when attendance was dropping year after year. And if we aren’t supposed to expect the Alerus to make a profit, why are they misleading the citizens of Grand Forks about making money?
Let’s look at the attendance figures. In 2008 they claim (I believe them, but with this bunch….) that 289,000 came through the doors. In 2007 that number was 263,000. That works out to be a 9.9% increase or 26,000 bodies. Impressive? But at what cost?
Operating losses (reported profit minus the hospitality tax subsidy minus concert fund losses) for the center were $1,093,000 in 2008. In 2007 they were “only” $316,181. It cost us $778,000 to bring in those 26,000 bodies.
But wait! There’s more!
Last summer the City Council authorized spending ANOTHER $614,000 on “capital improvements” in order to increase attendance. For that the football fans got a couple “Home of Fighting Sioux Football” banners to hang in and out of the center. I guess there was some landscaping work done as well. I’m not aware of any other place that money went to.
So you could say that we had to spend that in order to increase attendance as well. So our 26,000 additional attendees costs us an additional $1,392,000 or $53.54 apiece. How many events tickets even cost that much?
The sign of a healthy organization is one where more traffic means more profit (or at least less losses).
We can’t afford to increase attendance like this. Why don’t they must pay me $50 for every time I stay home.
Why really was attendance up anyway. Was it because we spent more money? Or was it because we hosted the North Dakota Democrat convention this year? It seems that they had a couple of pretty heavy weight speakers to draw in the crowds this year. How much of the losses (if any) were attributable to the Democrat convention? We’ll probably never know?
It seems to me that if that was responsible for the increased attendance the 1.4 million of expenses they blew to attract more people was even more wasted.
Finally I want to dispute the claim that the Alerus has created all of that attendance. Most of that traffic was for events that we always have had. The biggest draw at the Alerus is UND football. It seems to me that we’ve had football for over 80 years. The car and boat shows have always taken place. The Alerus is going after private businesses by taking their wedding party business. Those fools would still be getting married in town anyway. Sioux Boosters has been going on nearly forever as have Chamber of Commerce events.
Just because the venue changed doesn’t meant that the Alerus should take credit for any supposed economic benefit of the event. It would take a very careful and in depth study of the various events to come up with an honest picture of what the Alerus is bringing to Grand Forks. And an honest picture is something that we aren’t going to get.

I never believed it, but I am going to point out over and over how dishonest they are.

You’re also missing that we are paying for the center as well. The tax for the bonds are costing us around 7,000,000.

Now I know I’m getting traction.

oh, i forgot our wonderful horse park….. rich people didnt want to build one (because they knew it would be a stupid investment and a lost cause….. looks like a perfect fit for government, huh?), so a couple people pushed this though so we ALL got to pay for it. take out the NDSU funds and cass county edc loans (part of which are tax payer funds that could be loaned to worthy businesses) and the park no only losses money, but never even gets built.

nope…. sadly, i know it all too well. thus my comments on administration and lost property tax revenue.

question; how difficult would it be to figure out how much sales tax was generated over an event weekend? (an example; on an average weekend with no events there was $1M in sales tax generated in grand forks, on an average event weekend there was $2M in sales tax generated.) THIS IS THE NUMBER YOU REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT.

sorry guy, your city park does not cash flow either. its a 100% loss…. not only to administer it and maintain it, but lost revenue from property tax (if it were developed and privately owned) that could be gotten from it as well. it these things break even, youre winning the battle.

that said, if you were told this building would generate money, you were lied to. if you believed it, you were foolish.

get over it….. in fargo we just legally built a tax payer funded a hockey rink that everyone (yes, almost everyone that voted said no, so i feel fine saying AND literally MEANING ‘everyone’) voted against. and they want another $20M. plus, we need to add another $20M on our dome as well. We funded a zoo for $650K that we voted against. We are building a new $50M high school as our enrollment declines (we need another football team because EVERYONE should be able to play and start)………oh, I hear we are building a giant swimming pool so we can host one event per year in it. we throw out massive TIF money to anyone that asks.

one more thing; state spending led by libricans will be going up from a 23% increase last time to a greater 28% increase. so sorry, screw your $1.4M. I want my $1B in state money back!!!!

And the bigger thing is that they want us to invest ANOTHER 30 million dollars.

I would like to know what the charter of the Alerus Center says. I mean, it was supposed to bring events, conventions and all that other crap here along with better showbiz acts. Aside from Cher and Bill Cosby that ain’t happened. Then ya got to pay to park and pay to tailgate. I honestly read something in the bastion of journalism, the Grand Forks Herald, the other day. It said that Alerus management was going to survey the students at UND to see what acts they would like to come to Grand Forks. DUH!? Stupid politicians. They are so committed to keeping Grand Forks a family-friendly city, they can’t see the forest for the trees. But they sure know how to blow our money.

    BORING!!!! move along.

“sorry guy, your city park does not cash flow either.”

True. But I’d hazard a guess that the GF parks get a lot more use, both winter and summer, than the Alerus, bearing in mind its chronic lack of events.
