How Can You Endorse A Candidate When You Don’t Even Know The People Running?
Last night I posted a rebuttal to my hometown newspaper’s (the Minot Daily News) endorsement of Senator Conrad over his challenger Dwight Grotberg. In that post I criticized a statement in the Minot Daily’s endorsement piece which indicated that the paper was casting its “vote” against Grotberg because they “don’t know him very well.” My response to that statement was to point out that the folks at the Minot Daily are reporters. It is their job to get to know people like Dwight Grotberg so that they can better inform the public.
In response to that post I’ve received an email from the Grotberg campaign which indicates that the Minot Daily News has never even bothered to contact them for an interview with Dwight.
That seems like incredibly shoddy journalism to me. Here the Minot Daily News editorial staff is taking it upon themselves to inform the public about their preference in an election campaign and they didn’t even have the courtesy to talk to both candidates before they made up their minds. Which is especially astounding given that in their endorsement one of their complaints against the candidate they’re against is that they “don’t really know him.”
What a slap in the face to voters this is.
