Hot Abercrombie Dupe?

Some in the blogosphere are questioning the existence of one Amanda Doerty a/k/a Hot Abercrombie Chick.

From Julia Set via Wizbang:

'Just received an inside tip that the recently famous Hot Abercrombie Chick is really a male college student capitalizing on cute pictures of his girlfriend (previously unbeknown to her) in a rush of "beggars" trackbacks. In retrospect, it's pretty obvious that he is quite the player. Over the course of the last couple of months, "Mr. Abercrombie" has played every text-book trick for raising his popularity on the blogosphere. The most recent flood of activity, which probably led to his bust, occurred by spamming comments on popular blogs all over the net. Obviously, since he spammed so much, search engines boosted his ratings enough for his girl friend to find out, er, ex-girlfriend that is. Through the clever use of metaphysical dicsussion topics, polls and requests for help, this sick guy has probably sucked in many a lonely geek. Yuch.

So, is Amanda real? I think so. I've been reading her site for a while now and have always enjoyed her posts. Honestly, I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary but perhaps others have.

I do have something of an interest in this thing. Amanda is getting ready to move her site over to my server for hosting. I've emailed back and forth with her a couple times regarding her move and the responses I've gotten have always seemed to be on the straight and narrow.

When I first ran across the Hot Abercrombie Chick website I wondered about the amount of traffic and comments she was getting. I thought about writing a post comparing the amount of traffic Amanda got for her posts compared to the amount a male with a similar blog got. I had the feeling that Amanda's traffic may have been elevated because she's, well, a hot chick to use her terms.

I didn't do this because I didn't want to offend Amanda. I do find her posts insightful and well-written and I didn't want to take anything away from that.

If the Julia Set post turns out to be true (and I'm guessing it won't be) then I'm going to feel kind of dumb. Its not like I'm going to be out anything except a little time, but still...

Who does something like this? You have to be one desperate blogger to resort to something like this just to gain some traffic.

Update:

Here's a link to a biography page Amanda has done as well as a link to her MSN profile.

Everywhere source I've checked on the internet seems to point toward Amanda being real. I just can't find any inconsistencies.

I don't think Amanda is a hoax. If she is, somebody put a ton of time and effort into a joke that seems to have a non-existent punchline. My better judgment tells me that somebody has it in for Amanda.

I think that’s a load of crap, but if Amanda feels like proving her identity, all she has to do is write her website address on her forehead in ink and take a picture.

I’d read Amanda if she were a guy, or if she were an ugly girl.  That being said, I think the fact that she is, and calls herself a hot chick is certainly helping her get people to her site.  But they wouldn’t stay or keep coming back if her writing weren’t so good.

I totally agree with you Mark.  Amanda’s posts are great.  She is a talented writer and makes a lot of good points.  This is why I offered to host her.

Honestly, if it really is a hoax I don’t see the point.  Whoever is writing the posts is an excellent writer and would be able to do quite well in the blogosphere on those merits alone without having to create an alternate persona.

You mean that she’s a good writer for a hot chick, right?

I can see where you’d assume that because she is quite attractive, but I honestly think she’s a good blogger worthy of being read regularly.
